2010 Political BFDs in Review
By Joan Ruaiz, on December 19th, 2010
Whether you’ve thought about it or not, 2010 really was the year of the BFDs.
If you were looking at the world through the lens of the cynical know-nothing pundits, you may have hardly noticed, but if you had the good sense of putting on your reasonable-standards glasses, you too saw the BFDs as they stacked up throughout the year, clear as day.BFD #1 – Of course, who can forget the Health Care Reform Bill that passed in March of 2010? We’re talking “The Original BFD”! Sure, we clearly understand how some wanted more, and how some didn’t want any, but in the end, if one is fair, it was accurately termed – by our Vice President, no less — a BFD. If you asked the Teabaggers, I’m sure they’d agree.
BFD #2 – The BP Oil leak was for sure a BFD! How could you miss the hours upon hours of camera footage showing the oil escape out of the bottomless pit miles and miles down deep in the Gulf? Of course, a similar calamity struck (the Exxon Valdez) during Bush Sr.’s term, but it wasn’t linked directly to that President in the way the BP leak was directly associated with President Obama. I was half expecting him to don his wetsuit and grab a plunger. I don’t know if anything short would have calmed the troubled waters.
But what made the BP oil spill a really BFD is when President Obama “demanded and got” 20 billion dollars out of BP for the mess they had caused. And check this out: the government is now suing BP, and it appears to be as serious as an out-of-control-oil-spill-deep-in-the-Gulf about it. Now, how could we call this anything less than a BFD?
