| Is it still possible to have Congress vote on the Dream Act before X-mas? |
|
Or are they on vacation?! I just remember a vote done yesterday. So I'm a bit unsure if there's a chance Reid might join this.

| 2. DREAM failed on cloture for this session... |
|
It is dead until at least 2012, and will only have a shot then if we win a bunch of senate seats.

|
The sad thing is that if the 5 Democratic "no's" were yes, it would have passed.

| 9. It's a lack of votes for cloture, not time, which has killed the DREAM Act |

I'm not sure what that would accomplish.

|
No, they're not on vacation, but I don't see any way to swing five votes in the Senate on it.

|
Thanks for telling me that they can still vote if it's brought up again. I hope Reid makes a move. Maybe they can push the issue before and after the break before the new congress is sworn in.

| 7. They already did push the vote... |
|
Reid couldn't get cloture. They weren't 1 vote short or 2 votes short, they were 5 short.
The votes just aren't there to pass DREAM this session.
The next time it would have a serious chance at passage will be January 2013. And that is only IF we win the House back and a lot of Senate seats in the Nov 2012 elections..

| 10. Didn't they push the DADT vote countless times on cloture before it finally went through? |
|
I'm looking for the same process on The Dream Act.

| 12. No, it didn't happen that way. The successful cloture vote was the first one. |
|
The GOP dragged it's heals about getting to the point of having a cloture vote, but the vote happened only once.

compromise in which the GOP would agree to pass the Dream Act in return for giving the GOP what it wants on other issues. Theoretically that could happen during the next session of Congress, but I seriously doubt it.

| 18. You could get the military part of DREAM... |
|
...if you were willing to compromise on it and get at least something.
Pretty sure a solid majority exists for the part of DREAM that allows immigrants to become citizens by serving in the US military.
The college/university part and all the rest is the sticking point. The GOP won't budge on anything but the military piece.
I think DREAM in anything like its current form is well and truly dead till at least Jan 2013.

| 14. No, they pushed the Defense Authorization bill, of which DADT repeal was part |
|
Collins and Brown said they would vote for DADT repeal if it wasn't part of the full authorization, so Pelosi got the plain DADT repeal passed and Reid brought it to the floor.
