"President Obama insists that he is a really bad negotiator, therefore, the deal he got on the two-year extension of the Bush tax cuts and the one-year extension of unemployment insurance benefits was the best that he could do. This package also came with a one-year cut in the Social Security tax.

"This cut will seriously threaten the program's finances if, next year, the Republican Congress is no more willing to end a temporary tax cut than this year’s Democratic Congress.

"The logic here is straightforward. Under the law, the Bush tax cuts were supposed to end in 2010. Tax rates returned to their pre-tax cut levels in 2011. However, the Republicans maintained a steady drumbeat about the evils of raising taxes in the middle of a downturn, even if the tax increase would just apply to the richest 2 percent of the population."

to cover the huge amount of Baby Boomers that would be retiring at the same time. As I recall it was only suppose to be temporary. So, what happened to that money? Now everyone pays twice the amount necessary and the government claims it can't afford Social Security.

My understanding is that under the tax deal the only cut to the SS tax was the 2% decrease in what employees pay - Employers continue to pay the same. As we have an increasing population, it likely is going to be necessary to do something about SS and all entitlement programs in order to keep them running and available to those in need. I hope the answer isn't to raise the retirement age - To me that makes absolutely no sense from two standpoints - 1) People deserve retirement after a long life of contributing to the workforce. It would be particularly difficult in some jobs for people to be working into their later years. 2) If people don't retire,it limits further the job opportunities for our younger people.

Social Security will be just fine. The deficit commission cuts were minor and many low income retirees would get an INCREASE in benefits. And SS will survive just fine even if the regressive payroll tax isn't increased again. I'm not being manipulated by the speculative fear-mongering.

First of all, who gives a shit? Since it also has a hardship exemption which would be available at a YOUNGER age than it is currently, I'd say it's an improvement over all. If you're so concerned about people not being able to find a new job over 50 then you should LIKE the deficit commission plan. Try learning more about it than what you'll read from the fear-mongers.

Second, a lot can happen in 40 years. In the unlikely event that a vote is taken to raise the retirement age 40 from now (when the expected life span will no doubt be even longer) there's a good chance that a future Congress will reverse the decision.

So once again, all I see is a lot of fear-mongering hogwash over nothing.
