For Hawaii governor, discrediting anti-Obama 'birthers' is a top priority
Democrat Neil Abercrombie, who knew Obama's parents, is determined to torpedo the conspiracy theory. Underlying his effort may be a desire to dispel the view that Hawaiians aren't Americans in the same way as mainlanders.

Reporting from Honolulu -- Neil Abercrombie knew Barack Obama's parents when the future president was born here in 1961, and he has been aggravated by the so-called birther movement, which alleges Obama was not born in the United States and thus should be expelled from office.

Now Abercrombie has an office of his own -- he became governor of Hawaii on Dec. 6. -- and he intends to do something about it.

What, exactly, is unclear. But in an interview this week at the state Capitol, he left little doubt that torpedoing the conspiracy theorists was a priority.

"What bothers me is that some people who should know better are trying to use this for political reasons," said Abercrombie, 72. "Maybe I'm the only one in the country that could look you right in the eye right now and tell you, 'I was here when that baby was born.' "

I like how he's shifted the issue to Hawaii being the issue. I guess right wing birthers like to have it both ways and this governor is sick to death of it.

I never knew that there are people who feel that way about Hawaii, that it's too exotic and not American in some way. Another stupid that hurts.

8. Let's see, a Lt Col was just convicted in a Court Martial for missing

a troop movement over this. He lost everything he was working toward for 17+ years. He could even lose his Medical License because he got over a year in prison, which equates to a felony. How many more morons will sacrifice their futures over this nonsense?

11. The more it's debunked the more it reinforces the birther's opinion about the 'conspiracy'

Studies have shown about some nutty beliefs, which the birther belief on Obama falls under, that the more you try to debunk the lie and provide solid proof that it's a lie, the more it reinforces the lie in the minds of those who buy into it.

Why? Because the birther's believe there's a huge conspiracy to have Obama, a 'foreigner' be president, and that any evidence opponents of the birthers produce must have been faked by the people behind the conspiracy to hide Obama's real citizenship.

Another thing that helps reinforce the birther belief in the minds of the fools who believe it is convincing other people to believe in the conspiracy, convincing someone to believe something, no matter how nutty it is, makes it easier for you to believe it.

I once read about a 'mini-cult' you could call it in a Psychology book that claimed that the world was going to end, but aliens were going to come and take all of their order away with them in order to save them. The group had a specific date that this was supposed to happen at midnight. At first a lot of psychologists thought the group would disappear after that date when it was exposed as a fake. Instead what happened was the group waited around for a couple of hours after the aliens were supposed to have taken them away to save them, then the leader suddenly stood shouted that the aliens had saved the world from destruction, so there was no need for them to take them away. The idiot followers there believed him, and then the followers tried to get even more people to join their group.
