Obama at 51% in today's Gallup tracking poll

Shhhh…..

Don't tell anyone but for whatever reason, Obama has steadily been climbing in the Gallup Tracking poll again. He dropped to a low (but still good by Presidential standards) of 46% earlier in the week. Since then he has been rising each day. Today he is at 51%!

in case you are wondering, based on Gallup historical trends, a 51% approval rating is more than enough to get re-elected. If the Presidential election were held today, Obama would be looking at a second term as President.

5. It's a macabre thought...

...but I wonder how much Jared Lee Laughner has helped Obama's poll ratings? That is, does the climb in his approval percentages have anything to do with the Arizona shootings revealing the fascist heart of the Tea Party to moderates and independents who may previously have believed the corporate media narrative about them being a legitimate populist opposition to Obama's policies, rather than a fringe group of racist gun nuts?

If they went down, it was only temporary.

But his poll numbers were going up before Tucson - though there is no doubt his Tucson speech helped bolster his approval.

9. Dems are getting a fighting message together, and its appealing.

Its a lot of things, Schultz on MSNBC, the guys in Madison, etc. We're not seeing weird whispering triangulation and compromise here, we're seeing honest people willing to tell you what they believe in and fight for it.

Still though, its early for Dems to pop open champagne. The Republicans used their shellacking to reach out and reformulate themselves in terms of the Tea Party, and really that kind of reformulation is what Dems need to be doing but aren't. I don't feel that much a draw to stand with public sector unions for instance, because these guys are fighting to preserve benefits I only have in my wildest dreams. And when they win, I still won't have them...(Though I'm happier to stand with them than rich people making 1000 times as much while doing 1/100th the work.) I just wish there was a more inclusive vision, it seems like its time to dream big.

On February 23-28 at the same point in their Presidential term…..

President Ronald Reagan's approval rating was 40%

President Bill Clinton's approval rating was 42%

President Jimmie Carter's approval rating was 37%


President Obama's approval rating on Feb 7-13 averaged 48%. Today on February 19th he is at 51%.
