| 4. Honestly, it probably won't make a difference in 2012 |
|
This is great news, no doubt. But people have short memories, and in the fall of 2012, nobody is going to be focused on this - they'll be focused on the economy and issues at stake then. Remember that Bush, Sr. was at 90% and openly called a "lock" by the press.

My nearest gas station jumped from $3.97 last night to $4.07 today. That has more impact on 2012 than anything we're learning tonight.

Bush was primaried and forced hard-right AND met an opponent with remarkable charisma. That's a bad combo.

| 7. DON'T PLAY POLITICS NOW |
|
This is not the moment to play politics with this. Take the high road and it will pay off. The Freepers are already saying it's a hoax, let the other side show their true colors, everyone knows Obama is responsible for what happened.

He's going to get a big bump. Now we need to economy to bounce back. If that happens, the Republicans are toast. They won't have a chance in hell.

| 15. Obama's reputation will jump in terms of toughness |
|
I should have mentioned that in my previous post. In particular, he'll receive more benefit of a doubt from men. That has some lasting impact toward approval rating and 2012.
But in terms of re-election variables I'd trade gas prices of one year ago for anything that happened tonight. The joy tonight won't deflect the pain of watching the meter jump a dollar every few seconds, heading to 60 or 80 or above.

| 16. Agreed that gas prices will have the higher impact |
|
Edited on Mon May-02-11 03:15 AM by fujiyama
but this news alone may bring down gas prices somewhat. At least futures are down, with the hope that this will reduce regional volatility. Personally I don't get the logic, because possible retaliatory attacks may be in the works. I have a feeling gas prices will stay around $4 as a floor for a while.
Either way, it's obviously great news - on all fronts.
I predict a temporary bounce of maybe 5 points, bringing him up past 50% (I'm guessing around 55 max) and clearing the news cycle of bullshit like birtherism, a much needed relief. Only time will tell (along with the unemployment rate and gas prices) if his rating stays around there. The republican field is weak and idiots like Trump will fade. Maybe we'll see "serious" candidates make some strides like Romney. Hopefully we won't see the media trying to hold water for republicans being the "party of national security".
