Friday: Reid Statement On Deficit Negotiations

“Republicans have once again proven unable to overcome their ideological opposition to ending taxpayer-funded giveaways for millionaires, corporate jet owners and oil companies. I applaud President Obama for insisting that any deal to reduce our deficit be balanced between cuts and revenues. We must avert a default at all costs, so it is time to reengage in bipartisan talks on an agreement that at least accomplishes that goal.

“I agree with President Obama that a short-term extension is unacceptable.”

Today: Reid Statement Reaffirming Opposition To Short-Term Debt Ceiling Increase

“I want to reaffirm my statement from last night. I will not support any short-term agreement, and neither will President Obama nor Leader Pelosi. We seek an extension of the debt ceiling through at least the end of 2012. We will not send a message of uncertainty to the world.”

1. Good. I know Boehner thinks he can get short-term deals done. He thinks wrong. n/t

5. The only thing Boehner wants at this point is default. Otherwise he is seen as a loser by the GOP.

6. I think that since Obama, Pelosi, and Reid all said they won't accept short-term deals,

he and the Repubs. would see that as a win, too, to a lesser extent.

OTOH I'll be damned if I can think of one possible solution they can come up with IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS (before the Asian markets open, that's what I understand is the goal now, they are FINALLY running scared) that would be acceptable to Ds and can pass the insane House. Actually, I guess it depends an awful lot on Boehner (not good), what he may be willing to bring up for a vote, in other words how much he wants to rely on heavy D vote and the vare minimum of Rs. But I digress... :-)

8. Since the teabaggers who control the House said they won't accept the debt ceiling increase, it is

doubtful that Boehner would even allow a vote on raising the ceiling. He is in it for the default now.

9. As we move closer to the shut down (deadline) they will panic. The

one thing they do not want is to be blamed for not making a deal. If our three leaders continue to hold them to the fire they will be forced to give in or be to blame. The Tbaggers anger will fade in the face of the anger from Wall Street and the rich if the ceiling is not raised. The closer we get the more we are likely to win. I would guess that there is that one sentence bill that is just waiting in the background to be pass with no strings - at least for us - attached. Remember the extra session and how much we got done then when it was so close to a deadline?
