|
I'm "Demwing" - It comes from Dean's remark that he's from the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party. Dean has spoken on our behalf from day #1.
He is not irrelevant. In fact, his is the most sane and relevant voice in the HCR debate.
Thank you, Dr. Dean. You speak for me.

Kill the bill. Forcing people to buy insurance is no more the answer to a failed health care system than forcing people to buy houses is the solution to homelessness.

| 8. You know that "Arc of the Moral Universe"? |
|
It only bends towards justice because people like Howard are slugging away day in and day out to outweigh the greed of the "right" and the "pragmatism" of the centrists.
"Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice. I must confess, my friends, the road ahead will not always be smooth."

| 35. I find it strange, when Dean backed the public option idea many signed on... |
|
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 08:24 PM by slipslidingaway
to that idea, even though there were no details. But Dean said the PO would be like Medicare and that people could choose single payer, the public option, or they could stay with their private insurance.
When it was apparent that the public option had been severely weakened and would not be like Medicare, Dean still backed the HC reform bill and told people it would be like Medicare... and many people remained loyal to HC reform.
When Dean spoke at the annual AHIP convention and told representatives that the bill would not be that bad, the government would give subsidies to purchase their private insurance, many people still backed the public option.
When Dean said only 5 to 10 million people would be enrolled in the public option by 2019, people still supported the proposed legislation.
Now that these 5 to 10 million people will not be enrolled in the public option, Dean is against the bill and many seem to follow.
Very confusing.
Am I happy that he is speaking out now - Yes.
Is it too late???
Do I appreciate what he has done to put the Republicans in the minority - Yes.
Many people abandoned single-payer and backed the proposed bill because of the people, Dean included, who supported an idea with no guarantee of passage.
IMO that was not helpful in trying to achieve universal health care for everyone.

And though there is still time for them to do change course, it is clear that the momentum is against such change. Everyone has a breaking point. I believe I hit the wall at the same time Dean did, and am ashamed of the way he has been treated and dismissed.

that the PO was weak and most likely would not get stronger in the Senate. Yet the association between the PO and Medicare was still being made months later.
Better late than never, or the harm is already done???

a courageous +1 as this view is not popular.
I really wonder how many people would have withdrawn their support for Medicare for All and switched to push the public option if certain groups and individuals had not endorsed the idea of a public option.

If it weren't for Dean going along w/ taking single payer off the table at the very start of the debate in Congress, we might have had a huge DC protest ready to roll this week when the bill was basically finalized. He kept loyalists on board way too long and crippled our ability to fight back.
On edit: I have to wonder if he was trying to get back into the leadership's good graces by co-opting the desire for single payer, more than trying to get good reform.
