PPP Shocker: Herman Cain Ahead In North Carolina, West Virginia and Nebraska?

File this one as you will. But businessman Herman Cain gets the top spot in three new surveys of GOP voters from Public Policy Polling (D), conducted in North Carolina, West Virginia and Nebraska.

“In 4 years at PPP I’ve never been as befuddled by a set of polls as this past weekend’s, PPP pollster Tom Jensen tweeted on Monday. “Cain/Newt to top of GOP field out of nowhere?”

Yes, GOP voters have been incredibly fickle this time around. Yet this may mark the fastest plummet yet: Texas Gov. Rick Perry has gone from national frontrunner to competing in the middle of all these polls. Cain leads the field by ten points in North Carolina, six in West Virginia, and 14 in Nebraska in the PPP surveys. Just as confounding? Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is second in all the polls, except for North Carolina, where he is tied with former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney.

All three surveys probably reflect a boomlet that the Cain campaign is experiencing following an impressive showing in the FOX/Google debate and his surprise win at the P5 straw poll in Florida. ABC/WaPo also released some data Tuesday that showed Cain’s increasing buzz has a lot to do with the GOP primary audience getting to know him and coming away with positive feelings.

4. Joe Madison this morning said he has found out that the big money donors

are not giving Cain money and there still going to Romney and Perry and a lot were sitting on the side lines waiting for Christy.

5. Speaking of big money, Politico reports today Perry raised over $15 million this past quarter

In fact, these sources noted, Perry will raise over $15 million for the quarter.

Perry has not been soliciting general election dollars, these sources say, so his haul will be mostly usable for the primary.

AMong all that unsavory crop, I find Romney the least scary. He is awful in many ways, but he is not stupid, he is not a know-nothing, and he is not crazy (unless the obsession of winning at any cost to whatever is left of his integrity counts as being crazy).

Grocery shopping this morning, ran into a guy I used to babysit for when he was a kid. His cell rang and he mouthed "poll" to me. I wanted to catch up with him so I just stood there. I heard him say "I don't know who Herman Cain is, but anyone is better than Obama"
he finished the call. He started in on a racist rant...and I laughed, said "Herman Cain is Black" turned and walked away...somehow, I really didn't care how he grew up anymore...it was obvious
