WASHINGTON (AP) -- Thousands of demonstrators have packed the lawn in the shadow of the Washington Monument to hear various labor, education and civil rights leaders, including the Rev. Al Sharpton.

The March on Washington for Jobs and Justice on Saturday is intended to drum up support for President Barack Obama's jobs plan.

Marchers Demand Action On Jobs Legislation

Organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network, hundreds of people marched to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial to call attention to the country's unemployment woes.

"We come to take out country back to the people," Sharpton said at a rally that preceded the march.

The speakers reflected a mostly left-leaning ideology, but politicians from both parties were taken to task.

Walter Andrews, President of the Communication Workers of America, chastised both "mean-spirited Republicans" and "weak-kneed Democrats" in Congress.

"We demand jobs with justice," he said.

Washington D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray echoed that sentiment.

"We need a Congress that is going to act, that is going to stand up to create jobs," he said. "it's time for people to go back to work once again,"

...he warned lawmakers that, "If you can't stand up for the unemployed, we're going to vote to make sure you join the unemployed."

Sharpton blasts Senate failure to pass jobs bill

The Rev. Al Sharpton is condemning the Senate for failing to support President Barack Obama's jobs plan.

Sharpton spoke Saturday at the March on Washington for Jobs and Justice. He received cheers and applause when he said: "If you can't get the jobs bill done in the suites, then we will get the jobs bill done in the streets."

Sharpton says the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. would have supported the cause for the "cast down and cast back."

King's son Martin Luther King III also spoke. King invoked his father's words from a half-century ago, when the elder King talked about the need for redistributing wealth. King says his father believed America must redistribute wealth to survive responsibly.

Well...that's because it's easy to film a tea party rally
There are so few of them it's easy to fit them all in.
All you have to do is set the camera on a tripod, make he camera wide enough to get the bulk of the 32 people there in it, then go to lunch.
Come back in 4 hours and voila you have your video

4. Rev. Sharpton has a way of articulating what so many think and feel

but don't know how to put it. People are starting to wake up and realize they're being used and abused. When it comes time to recognize an American "for the people" I hope they don't forget the good Reverend. He's brought a lot of heart, soul and hope to many of us.

Even the stones were shipped from China, assembled by Chinese workers...

Martin Luther King was born in Georgia, where there are granite and marble quarries. Nearby Alabama (remember King also pastored in Montgomery AL) also has some of the world's best marble and granite.

This monument was not designed by an American or even a black artist. It's depressing that the Memorial commission paid for Chinese designers, stones and labor when American artists and workers are begging for work.

I love MLK. Do not like outsourcing. :(
