House votes to restrict healthcare law, with White House support

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The U.S. House Thursday voted to restrict eligibility for Medicaid, insurance exchanges and other aspects of President Obama's healthcare reform legislation.

The House approved H.R. 2576, 262-157, with the help of 26 Democrats and the support of the Obama administration, The Hill reported.

The Congressional Budget Office has said as many as 1 million people could be affected by the restrictions, which, among other things, would include Social Security benefits as income in determining eligibility.

White House support for H.R. 2576 is seen by many as an acknowledgement that the healthcare law passed last year overextended eligibility for government programs.

there is more to it than that. It will have the effect of increasing health care funding by $11 billion.

Boehner and Republicans know they have to do something because the pressure is on. They don't have much else to go on, and the pressure is going to increase.

Democrats would just as soon leave it, but, as with the repeal of the withholding they passed into law, Republicans are banking on people having short memories. They get to act like they're doing something by repackaging the President's proposals.

...increases costs? It's increasing health care spending for the right purpose. The fact that the bill fixes something the administration saw as a glitch is not a bad thing. The fact that Democrats voted against it is not a bad thing either. They simply disagree with the fix. It's not the first time, especially on Medicaid. Most Democrats don't approve of the administration's effort to strengthen federal authority over the program

In this case the Democrats voted in the favor of Medicaid. The president supported the republicans in voting against it.

And your on edit would seem to say that the president sought to cut Medicaid and that then sought the republicans help in doing so. That surely isn't right.

was that it expanded access to Medicaid but I can't say I'm surprised to hear that's being cut back. At least the insurance companies are still protected :sarcasm:
