And I spent much of the next couple of days retrieving "portions", as incomplete human remains are called.

I then spent most of the next four years in southwest asia, fighting wars that one way or another shook out from that act of terror. I don't particularly defend the logic of those wars (particularly Iraq), but that's not my point.

I understand people's hesitation here to cheer this. From an operational standpoint, this means basically nothing. And of course this will become a political football, and the fact that it helps our side makes that no less odious. But the primate in me can't help but say that I'm glad the fucker is dead.

Operationally, this doesn't fix anything, remotely. And revenge is a low base primate instinct yada yada yada. But moral victories mean a lot.

It made the Empire of Japan re-direct resources to protect the homeland, as they realized that they were vulnerable to attack where before they thought all fighting would be done at a distance.

Made the war just one bit more expensive for them to wage, and every little bit helped.

we had been getting our asses kicked pretty good up until about then. It was a clear turning point just like this is.
