This comment came from the NY Times Magazine's story on Jerry Brown, but has a broader truth:
Government is the responsible parent and conservatives are the teenagers living in the house Government built and maintains for them.
Meanwhile the conservative teenagers consume everything they can snatch from their brothers & sisters, obstinately evade contributing their fair share to the household, and whine and complain all the time about how it's not fair they should be forced to have any consideration for anyone they share the house with at all.
Like parents everywhere, Jerry Brown must endure the conservative teenager's narcissistically 'principled' tirades, keep repeating the facts and ethics that must be respected, maintain the relationship no matter what, and have faith that as the conservative teenagers mature and realize their role as citizens of the household and community, they will make 'good decisions' when 'offered choices' at the ballot box and will 'do the responsible thing' to keep a roof over their heads; no matter how much the conservative teenagers just want more gas money or to spend the whole day glued to Fox TV.
It's a tough and thankless job, but if Government doesn't take care of the conservative teenagers- no matter how arrogant, misinformed, selfish and combative they may be- who will?
