For a while there, the LGBT community was pretty down on Obama, who made all the right pro-gay (though not quite pro-gay marriage) noises as a candidate, but seemed to lose interest once in office. Two things have changed. Obama threw some serious capital behind the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell. And the Republicans' 2012 would-be presidential nominees seem even more Neanderthal than usual on LBGT issues (e.g. Rick Santorum: gay couples don't deserve the "privilege" of adopting children: Donald Trump: gay marriage is like an unattractive golf putter).
And so, reports Politico, LGBT donors are flocking to President Obama's reelection campaign, with the president banking on gay donors to make up for defections from other camps, such as Wall Street execs and pro-Israel Jews. Obama 2012 is gaying up, too. While his 2008 campaign finance committee included one gay man, this year's team boasts 15. Plus, three crucial fundraising positions - Obama's campaign finance director, the DNC finance chair, and the White House social secretary, are
filled by gay men. "You will not only see a united community that will contribute to Obama," David Mixner, a prominent gay activist in New York, tells Politico. "But they will work their asses off."
