| Pseudo-Armageddon: Jean Shepherd radio program from the 60's... |
|
In the program, Shep recalls that when he was on the radio in Philly, he was living in the suburbs and used to stop at a grocery store for morning OJ or whatever, and the owner told him that in a few days, he'd be out of the store and part of the Second Coming which was going to occur near Paoli, PA. Apparently, may people quit their jobs, this guy sold his store, and committed other behaviors which might come to mind right at the End, and they went to the hill and awaited the Apocalypse. They waited all day and some into the night, and finally, they gave up and went home, if they still had one.
Some things never change...
According to Shep, this was in the middle to late 1950's and I'll try to find the particulars and post them, although in the past I have tried and come up empty.

just like Thurber, not every recollection Shep had about his childhood was entirely true. But they were all such good stories.

| 2. this wasn't his childhood and there were several incidents of this |

type near where I lived over the years...lot of fundies...what may be a fib is the gorcery store part...that's where, like Doctorow, he excelled in weaving fiction into fact.
I have about 1100 of his radio shows and listen to them all night on an mp3 player if I awaken...great stuff.
