Oregon Senator Wyden freezes second Internet censorship bill

A U.S. Senator from Oregon has once again taken a stand against his own party to defend what he sees as the inherant right to free speech on the Internet, placing a hold on a bill that could force search engines and Internet service providers to block websites deemed to be "infringing" on copyrights.

The Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act -- or "PROTECT IP" for short was part of a second attempt to pass provisions of the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA), which failed to clear Congress during its last session thanks to a parliamentary maneuver by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR).

And once again, Wyden has stepped forward to ensure those measures do not pass.

There appears to be some dumb policy that only people living IN Oregon can get responses vis email, but I see nothing that says we cannot email TO him.

3. That dumb policy has been the norm on most Congressional websites for as long as I can remember.

It's a way for legislators to cut the truly massive number of e-mails they get.

That's exactly right. Even at the state level, the amount of email they get is massive, and it's probably insane when we're talking about a U.S. senator.

At the state level, senators can still try to answer emails personally, but when they're getting flooded by blast-mail campaigns, it becomes impossible to do that. For a U.S. senator, he has to resort to staffers using form-letters just to keep on top of constituents sending personally-written letters, so I don't blame them for screening out non-constituents one bit.

It sucks, but the volume's so high that a U.S. Senator has to resort to only reading and responding to samples of the mail he or she gets.

6. Wyden is one of the best Democratic pols for People.

I am a native and current north coast Californian but spent 9 years in Oregon where I learned of and voted for Wyden.

No pol is perfect but Wyden is one of the better Dems in DC and we should be acute to his opinion.

I am concerned about limitations to low or zero cost high speed internet access for all.
