I think it may well be true that many people (as in the above example) will make their selection based on criteria greatly different from actual substance - or some may even disguise how they made the decision.

This guy wears a rainbow pin in honor of his deceased brother, he is a Viet Nam vet, a family man who helps take care of his MIL. On the days when we take rides together, we very rarely speak of anything personal. It took me years of rides before I discovered two of those items just listed (the POW/MIA patch was a give-away, I had to ask when/where he served.) The other two items just came about casually over a period of time.

I genuinely believe many people are deeper than they let on, and most of those don't broadcast what is going on inside them.

Palin is by any point of comparison a classic narcissist. She is self centered, knowing no other facts except those in her own head. She is not well read, not well taught and panics at the first suggestion of responsibility.

She will always be drawn to the light of attention and often will mold herself in the image of what she perceives as acclaim from those around her.

She is very dysfunctional and by that alone is unacceptable for any public office.

Ms. Palin cannot be nor could be a serious candidate (although the press treats her as such) - she is Kryptonite to anyone who wishes to be taken seriously in any race because of her hunger for attention. Candidates and State party pols have chosen to avoid her because when she walks in the room, all the air gets sucked out by her ego.

Her 'tour' is not a serious attempt at even laying the ground work for candidacy, it is simply a way of keeping her in the focus of the general public so she can continue to make money.

She tried her hand at public speaking, $100,000 dollars is pretty steep. She tried her hand at writing - she has nothing of substance to say. She gets paid to show up on Fox, she is a ratings booster.

Now she is trying to replicate the Beck/Hannity/Koch Brothers formula. Drive around in a big bus and nose your way into events almost at random.

She is simply a talented grifter who wants a reality show based on her running for office and not getting elected.
