Media Snoozed When Glenn Beck Called Cindy Sheehan a "Slut"

MSNBC host Ed Schultz has been suspended for a week after he called conservative radio host Laura Ingraham a "right-wing slut." The episode has caused a huge uproar in both the mainstream media, as well as the right-wing blogosphere and talk radio. Ingraham herself has waded into the controversy by accusing Schultz of "misogyny."

But how many people recall back in 2005 when Glenn Beck called Cindy Sheehan a "slut"? http://mobile.thestar.com/mobile/entertainment/article/970808 Don't feel bad if you don't remember this. Unlike the uproar over Schultz's remark, the mainstream media snoozed when Beck called Sheehan a "slut." And of course, Ingraham was silent about her good buddy Beck's remark back in 2005.

Beck faced absolutely no punishment or reprimand for his 2005 remark. Indeed, this episode is completely forgotten today. Since then, Beck has gone on to enjoy an astonishingly lucrative career. For example, in 2009 alone, he pulled down a cool $32 million, mostly from his vast radio and publishing empire.

The moral of this story, of course, is this: if you're a Republican, you can pretty much say anything you want these days (including using violent rhetoric against Democratic politicians). But if you're a Democrat, you've got to be very careful and watch what you say---or you will be immediately punished, as Schultz found out.

Beck was a nobody in 2005. He didn't even have his CNN Headlines News show at the time. Sure he had a radio show and listeners but nobody outside of the audience knew who he was or paid attention to him.

for years both here on DU and elsewhere. No point in engaging in useless, energy-wasting busy work.

'Yelling' was not meant literally, didn't think I'd have to explain that to anyone here.

Working to restore some semblance of the Fairness Act and breaking up the conglomerates that now control the media, (who throw complaining emails and letters in the garbage as we who used to waste time on that exercise found out, btw), is what needs to be done and that will only happen when enough real Democrats are elected to Congress and start working for the people instead of Corporate America.

The US media is a disgrace. I would not waste a minute trying to talk to the same people who are the cause of the problem. But if you have the time to waste, you are certainly free to do so.

standards for Beck and his ilk than they do for Progressives. And it definitely needs to be pointed out, over and over again.

Clearly we do hold ourselves to a higher standard as is demonstrated by the difference in the treatment of Beck and Ed Schultz. So that isn't the point of the OP at all.

What respondents seem to be saying is that it is okay for the corporate media to seek out these incidents with leftists and use them for systematic, broad-based attacks on the left, but when the right does it, we should let the media get away with letting it slide because the right wing is just like that.

I completely disagree in principle. If calling people sluts is unacceptable behavior, then we need to start enforcing this with the WORST offenders FIRST - i.e. don't persecute petty offenders when major criminals are on the loose.

....specifically, that "real Texans" were "putting on their camouflage gear" and "getting ready to go hunting" for Ms Sheehan and those others of us that he termed the "glorified beggars" in "the ditches" outside of Crawford.

(As one of those that Limbaugh labeled a "glorified beggar", I had the personal experience of hearing Limbaugh's homicidal gloat on his August 22, 2005 broadcast as I was returning from Camp Casey "in the ditches" outside Crawford.)

Here's an excerpt from Limbaugh's rant that the media ignored:

"How many of you could take a week or two off or whatever and hang around a ditch? I mean, where do these people work? First question I always ask: What do they do for a living? Where do they get their money? Donations, folks, donations. They're glad handlers, they're glorified beggars, they're down there raising money during all of this. At one point I saw today Sheehan's website is getting 25 grand a day. Now you got a bunch of caterers down there and Joan Baez is down there strumming out the tunes, but the Washington politicians are not joining them down there, and this is upsetting....

...method of attacking a critic. It effectively changes the subject of the debate to something humans are naturally and instinctively interested in. So, how does Sheehan's alleged slutiness make the Iraq war a good idea?

23. If we give progressives a free pass on using ignorant words we are no better than they are.

We could probably find hundreds of examples of the right-wing using racist, sexist, homophobic and/or other politically incorrect words. It's common place with them.

That doesn't mean it's ok for progressive to use these words or to let progressive slides when they do. I'd rather our people be held to higher standards because we are the better group of people.

And Beck HAS paid for the use of such ignorant words. He can't get a decent sponsor outside of these obscure companies and his ratings have dropped dramatically. Same with many of the other right-wing talk-show screeds.

We are better than the right-wing and I would think Ed Schultz would be the first to agree with that statement. He readily accepted the punishment because even HE knew it was wrong. I gives me much more respect for the guy knowing that although he can be human and make mistakes from time to time, he will hold himself accountable and recognize when he is wrong.
