One of the pitfalls of following politics is that you see things that ordinary Americans would rather not look at. Obama's offer to put Social Security on the negotiating table is at best a feint. He's fully aware that it's really not negotiable at all.

With all the criticism of the president these days, I find myself starting to dig in. I voted for Obama and I continue to support him. He took a difficult job because he is a great American. However, I'm aware that a visit to the sausage factory is enough to make you not want to eat sausage. Nonetheless I support the president even when I don't completely understand his motivations. I trust President Obama.

line is I trust him, too. Although I'm not as confident as you that this is a feint -- he may sincerely believe it's do-able without doing TOO much harm. :shrug: But I don't know either way for sure. I DO believe if he does tinker with SS/Medicaid/Medicare it would be political suicide. Bush's ratings plummeted when he started pushing privatizing SS (but not as a result of all the rest of the despicable things he did!).

You are so right about the majority of Americans not being aware of much of the stuff we are.

This president has to maneuver at many different levels. As the first AA president he has to deal with things no president ever has. The racists who oppose him for no other reason than his race. The corporate media that is stronger than ever, a far right supreme court. An out of touch and corrupt congress that is only focused on their own self interests and could give a rat's ass about this country. Some likened him to Jackie Robinson; he cannot come off as the "angry black man". Like it or not, he has to be acceptable to mainstream America. What would have happened if on day one he started implementing a wish list of progressive policies? He would have been crucified. Do I agree with all of the compromise he gives to the republicans? No, but I feel he is a strong and worthy leader. What President Obama needs is MORE support, not less. He is trying to bring about sustained change against a group of people who would gladly see him destroyed.

What we need to do is get off the couch and get out the vote. Put more progressives in office in 2012. The republicans did it in 2010 - we have much larger numbers, why can't we do it in 2012?
