Should school districts ban smokeless 'e-cigarettes' on school grounds?

A plan by one of Jackson County’s largest school districts to ban smokeless electronic cigarettes received mixed reviews from readers online and on Facebook, with some fuming over the idea and others praising the effort.

The Western School Board on Tuesday had a first reading of a revised district policy that would ban the devices. The policy would go into effect after a second reading in August.

Other area school districts have yet to consider a ban on the devices.

Several readers viewed the ban as penalizing people who are looking for alternatives to try to quit smoking tobacco cigarettes.

Nicotine is a powerfully addictive substance, it's difficult not to see it as being a drug.

e-cigs vaporize e-juice, which is usually propylene glycol but can also contain vegetable glycol in varying amounts. This e-juice can have flavoring added and can have nicotine added in varying strengths. I started out with 12mg nicotine e-juice, then moved to 6mg nicotine e-juice and now I vape 0mg nicotine e-juice, so there is no "drug" in my e-cig. So the drug-free thing I've got, but it still looks like I'm exhaling smoke when I vape.

And by the way, a "smoking culture" is harmless if the smoking is harmless.
