It’s almost three years since Republican strategists Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace were telling us that Sarah Palin had been vetted, that she was a great choice, that she was ready to be President. Now that the truth has come out, the story of the behind the scenes real Sarah Palin should serve as a warning for all voters.


Yes, your instincts were correct. Sarah Palin is not well, but then neither is the Republican Party.

MADDOW: It is a great book. And the sort of the frame for this book 
is that a crazy person and treated sensitively, not made fun of, but 
treated sensitively as a person who has mental illness issues, ends up 
getting to be vice president, because we have a political process that 
allows that to happen.


A pause while we note that it is acknowledged that the person who has a mental illness is the 2008 GOP Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.


SCHMIDT: …(after much equivocating that vetting failures happen on both sides of the aisle, not acknowledging that Edwards was not nominated by his party in 2008) I think that there have been failures in the vice presidential vetting 
process. I was involved in one of them…And I think, you know, there are rooms — that there is substantial 
room for improvement about how the vice president is selected…. And the first and foremost consideration 
should be: is this person qualified to be the commander in chief? Because 
there are plenty of examples in the history of the country when the vice 
president`s been called on to take the oath of office.


And I think if you look back at, you know, the last couple years of 
American politics, both on the Republican side, but also on the Democratic 
said, there`s been deficiencies in that area (I must have missed the Democratic Sarah Palin, but surely he/she is a paid commentator on MSNBC today screaming about Mitt Romney killing people whilst putting crosshairs on Mitt’s district, since everything is equal.)


MADDOW:….the 
last person on the sidelines who could conceivably get in before the filing 
deadlines start piling up is Sarah Palin. Most people think she`s not 
going to run. Would either of you — what would either of you say to Sarah Palin 
getting in the race? I have a feeling neither of you would support her as 
a candidate. But what would you say?


WALLACE: You know, I think that if she were to step back in the 
arena, she`d have to — she`d have to play by some of the normal 
conventions. And I think that will enrage her base of supporters. But the 
truth is the times are too dire to run as the man or woman for the right or 
the left. I think that was the difficult lesson Obama learned and the price he`s 
paying for pushing an agenda that appealed maybe too much to the left. 
People don`t like that. (Nicole is pretending she can’t read polls but give her a break; it’s her job as a Republican campaign operative these days to pretend she can’t see reality.)….So, my advice for anyone, particularly for her — and she has a whole 
nest of problems that would, you know, that she`d have to confront. But 
the first one would be to resist her most partisan and most polarizing 
instincts because that would make her the wrong candidate for the moment.


MADDOW: Does she have anything to offer beyond that? (This question demonstrates why Rachel Maddow is such an excellent interviewer.)


WALLACE: Look, you know, I was inspired by her to write a book about 
someone who was cuckoo for coca puffs. So, don`t ask me.


MADDOW: Steve?


SCHMIDT: Republicans overwhelmingly do not 
want to see her in the race. If she gets in the race, her poll numbers are 
in the second or somewhere between the second and third tier of the 
candidates….She`s not going to be the Republican nominee.

Wallace and Schmidt seem sane, intelligent and rational, therefore it’s startling to realize a) they are still Republicans and b) they somehow manage to get out the false equivalencies such as Wallace suggesting that President Obama is as polarizing as Sarah Palin without gagging on the truth. President Obama has written two books that cover his policies and thinking process, and in no way does he come off as a partisan hack. Both Wallace and Schmidt are clearly clinging to the Jon Huntsman brand lifeboat for their Party. Let’s generously call them optimists, while acknowledging that it is their job to sell Americans on Republicans no matter how bad of an idea it actually might be for America.

5. It's real simple to explain how Sarah Palin was picked - she had ovaries and said yes

Republicans truly believed that the democrats were divided after the 2008 DNC primaries. They thought that the Hillary Supporters were going to abandon the Obama-Biden ticket and look at other candidates for their votes.

McCain was a poor choice overall for the candidates, he was already too old but he was also getting a little loopy. And he would have to go up against a very charismatic candidate who could be the first person of color to be elected to the highest office. McCain's only choice was to find his own 'historic candidate' to counter Obama.

I'm guessing that McCain asked just about every qualified female republican candidate out there who actually has a strong political background including people like Kay Bailey Hutchenson, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. And I'm guessing any female republican with a strong political background saw that McCain was a sinking ship and didn't want to end up being the Geraldine Ferraro of the republican party (Ferraro was the first female on a major ticket when she was picked as Mondale's VP choice in 1984 - her career pretty much faded away after Reagan trounced the dems in that election).

In comes Sarah Palin, she's been elected a governor (although in a state with one of the smallest US populations, even Delaware has more people) and she's attractive. But she's not some dainty woman who cringes at things like guns or the outdoors - so she should be able to connect with the average voter. She not only seems to have the perfect family, but she even had another kid in her 40s and makes good with the anti-choice crowd since Sarah carried the child to term even though the child was born with Downs.

On paper it seemed like she would be the perfect VP to help counter Obama and win over some of those Hillary Democrats.

But the vetters never dug below the surface of Sarah Palin. Nor did they do any kind of mental capacity checks to see if she could handle being thrusted into the spotlight. I think the first sign of when they were doomed was probably when they gave Palin 'carte blanche' at such upscale department stores as Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. This is a woman who seemed down to earth clothing her family with the best finds at Wasilla Wal-mart and suddenly the woman can buy whatever she wants from very expensive stores. And Sarah ended up spending over $150k in new duds. She was also spending money on expensive stylists and make-up artists too. Sarah was acting like a winner of a major lottery jackpot. They say that many people, after winning huge jackpots, usually end up losing it all because after living their lives as working class people they never really learn to adapt properly to being wealthy because the wealth happened so suddenly. That's Sarah Palin for you too.

Kristol knew her - and probably had some sort of adolescent crush on her - and was tied into the McGrump campaign. He pushed them towards Palin relentlessly even though Schmidt, IIRC, thought it was a mistake. But when Grampy couldn't have his buddy Moldy Joe Lieberman he caved in to the Kristol clique and selected Grifterella.

More evidence, if any was needed, that Bill Kristol has never been right about anything in his life.

but I remember in reading Frank Baily's book about the role that the Republican Governors Association had played in her winning the Alaska Governor's race.

That was an interesting discussion into the transformation of Palin. They pumped a shitload of money into that race and pretty much made her. I think they definately saw her as a counter to Hillary Clinton (and yes, looks did play a big part in that) so I think they had her primed for this before McCain even became the nominee.

She cashed in big time with her win in Alaska and the RGA called in their chips with McCain.

Did you know, Thomas Edison was considered an idiot as a child because he flunked many of his classes? Bill Gates, of course, dropped out of Harvard - and subsequently became the richest man in America. Ray Kroc did not drop out of college - he didn't go at all.
