I'm about to cry: just received my first eviction notice

I work damn hard, I've been eating nothing but rice and ramun and the food donated to the OccupyAustin movement. I'm seaching feverishly for a second job. Other than cigarettes I have been able to keep "luxury" spending down to $15 a week and still I can't pay my fucking rent or utilities. I made $9 for an 8 hour shift on thurs. I can't tell whether I'm more angry, sad, or disappointed in myself but I do know thy all of the strides I have taken to better myself, all the wonderful purpose I have have obtained, all the sacrifices I have made to help others, all the progress I've made in battling my depression and insomnia just went out the window. Goddamnit I am one of the hardest working, most dedicated, level headed and intelligent employees most businesses will ever have, why the fuck can't this work for me? When is the good kharma gonna come back around? When God when will I not have to continuously struggle just to have peace of mind? Will never give up, I know I have great things I can do in the future to help others. From the horses mouth I have already saved lives and souls, and it is that knowledge, that purpose, that I can and do make positive differences in people's lives that keeps me going, as well as my friend's children, my nieces and nephews that I love more than anything on this earth and I need to be there for them. Sometimes connection through serendipity is far thicker than blood. But sometimes, I just want to roll over and stay in dream.

Go apply for food stamps tomorrow morning. Should help and given what you said here I'm guessing you can probably max out the benefit. Also, check out unemployment insurance. You don't have to actually lose your job to get it. If you've had your hours seriously cut back or taken pay cuts you should still be able to get unemployment insurance (though you need some employment history to qualify). Check into both of those. Maybe you can get one or the other, or even both.

Think wide too... think about jobs that kind of sound like they suck and what companies get really busy this time of year. Everybody goes and applies at the mall and at all the stores (and the stores are hiring for the holidays) but if everybody applies, only a few get jobs.

Not too many people applying to work at UPS. And UPS is doing a lot of hiring right now to handle the holiday season. It's the busiest time of the year for them. All nighttime jobs... go show up at a warehouse and throw boxes around (some of the jobs are very physical, some are pretty easy - if you don't look super strong they'll find you an easier job). It's actually not that bad. Aside from your first week or two you don't see your supervisors much and they don't ride you at all. It's pretty nice. Just listen to your iPod all day and get a little exercise. Check into them. Might help out with the cash situation a little bit.

Going out to dinner to even an Olive-Garden-level restaurant is a rarity. We almost NEVER see movies in theaters anymore (although I made an exception this year for Captain America, and I wasn't disappointed). I used to subscribe to several magazines and bought and read a book a week. Not anymore.

They'll take my (minimum-level) Netflix subscription when they pry it from my cold, dead hands, though. Since I haven't had cable in nearly 20 years, I don't mind the expense.

go down to you local family and children office and stand there until someone pays attention to you. Check on the internet. Someone gave me a list of information of helpful links once on here. There is help available but you have to find it. You made the first step by opening up to us.

I used to work as an apartment manager and we tried very hard to not evict people because it was a hardship on us also. Plus we felt bad about it. So you may be able to work something out where you pay weekly and/or they may be able to help you get help.

You'll lose self esteem only if you choose to. I was evicted twice because my landlords were realtor speculators who traded houses to each other to make more money. A lot like Wall Street. Every time one bought the house they naturally had to make a profit on it before selling it to another realtor. Since we had contracts they would just break them by evicting us so they could raise the rent on the next tenants. After having it happen twice we decided to buy a house.

I've also been through bankruptcy last year and was deep into the foreclosure process when my mortgage company decided to give me a loan modification. I can pay the mortgage but I struggle every month to make ends meet. It seems like it will never end.

I'm the 99% and so are you. Take as much pride as you can from that knowledge. You're not alone.

HUD is a Federal agency who provides housing based on ability to pay. There is usually a waiting list, but it's worth getting on it, even if it takes a few months, even a couple of years.

65. You're in Texas, so you have some time.

Examine the 3-day notice you were given for non-payment of rent. It must specify you and your address just as it appears on your rental agreement. It must give a dated deadline to move out. If it does not, you are already in position to have your Justice of the Peace strike it.

If it's correct, then don't move out. Your landlord may use a lockout if he has no imagination and no knowledge of the law. If there is a lockout on your unit, there must be someone on premise 24 hours a day to allow you entry. That's the law. Call the police if that is broken - police will make them remove the lockout.

After the 3 days is up, your landlord will have to go the JP and get you subpoenaed for a hearing. Depending on local conditions, you might be served in 1 to 5 days. You will have 5 days from there to contest. On the last day, go down and contest it. Borrow the $70 filing fee by hocking something. Go later in the afternoon to file your reply - you'll get an extra day on them being served. You'll also pick up 5-10 days before the hearing.

At the hearing, the judge will decide against you, but you can often get the judge to give you a couple of days to get moved. This should gain you between 14-23 days to get some money together to move somewhere else more affordable, or seek help in a shelter or your next move. But it allows you to remain in place for 2 to 3 weeks while you get more organized than the sheriff showing up and giving you an hour to get out. That will happen if you ignore the first subpoena.

Good luck on finding a better situation. Hope this helps get you a little more time for transition.

Brings back memories. Ten years ago I was living with my fiance and two kids and we practically survived on ramen for a year or more. Back then it was a dollar for a box of 12 packages. Cheap, filling, but damn do you get sick of it after a while.

Here I am now living with mom and dad and the best job I can find atm is working weekends washing dishes. Glad I had no pride to swallow when I moved back in.

As someone who also suffers with depression and anxiety disorder my advice is to hang on to that job if you can - any job is better than none... that's what I keep telling myself, at least. There's been a lot of good advice shared in this thread - I hope you have family or friends that can help out and offer you a place to stay if you need it. Don't give up, I know how hard it is to struggle by with next to nothing and I know what it's like to get an eviction notice. Things will get better in time... but no matter what happens, it's your attitude and your perspective that's going to keep you afloat. Do everything you can to stay positive and optimistic.
