Cyclists offended by ‘reality sucks’ slogan from GM

General Motors just learned the hard way: Don’t make cyclists mad.

And certainly don’t imply they’re only riding bikes because they can’t afford cars.

GM recently pulled an advertising campaign that poked fun at cyclists with the slogan “Reality Sucks.” (See the ad here courtesy of Bike Portland.)

The ad showed an embarrassed-looking cyclist riding next to an attractive woman in a car. Aimed at college students, it featured the words “stop pedaling… start driving” and directed potential customers to a website about college discounts.

Uhoh.You can probably imagine the response, but here’s a taste.

3. my college age daughter tells me that

because the majority of new jobs pay between $20,000 - $25,000, something has to give, and for a lot of younger adults that is car ownership. Just think of the expenses they are avoiding, car payments, gas, insurance, maintenance.

Corp America had been come to terms with the fact that lower paying jobs do not make a great consumer society.

6. I never made $20,000 a year in my life

and I never had or wanted a car. Bikes ftw.

I don't use a bike now that I'm in Buenos Aires (people here drive like maniacs, it's just not safe) but I always did in the U.S., and really miss it. Now I just use public transportation.

They have sucked for years.

9. Reality is biting American car companies in the ass

Their whole business model was based on convincing people they needed a new car every three years.

Now people are holding onto cars longer and the industry hasn't figured out how to adapt.

For the record, I remember once when I pulled up next to an attractive woman when I was on a bike in college.

She gave me a beer, drove off and I never saw her again.

10. In the universe of offensive stuff

This is a minor asteroid. Very minor. The fact remains that college students, even with the no-doubt fabulous terms of the GM financing package, don't have much need of a car, particularly if they're living on campus at a small to medium-sized college or university.

I just assume the cyclists around here are looking to deliberately accidently kill themselves or have alot of DUI's.
