It's your job to serve and protect. The 99% are the people you were hired to protect. They're not breaking laws or engaging in un-American activities, quite the contrary. Protesting injustice is a proud tradition that is seeing a come back.

Even though the 1% are donating to precincts doesn't mean they own you. You may even consider yourselves 99%, you should, unless you're a hedge fund manager in your spare time.

come from the people. If they are ordered to visit mayhem and injury on peaceful protestors, they are committing a travesty against their real employers.

Ten years ago this month, more than 2,000 newspaper workers went on strike against The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press.

The short version of history is that they lost, badly. The newspapers, both owned by powerful national corporations, had replacement workers ready to roll. They had secretly arranged to pay the costs of police overtime to defend their Sterling Heights printing plant. They were prepared to do what it took to win, regardless, and the sad fact is that the unions were not.

3. What percentage of "the 99%" are protesting?

A very small number. The rest are trying to get to work, get their kids to school, get groceries, and live and work in areas that don't smell like a waste management facility.

Protesters have a First Amendment right, no doubt about it. But in a civilization, your rights end where another person's begin. And it doesn't matter if you claim you're speaking for "everyone else."

5. Two people I know who work in a restaurant there tell me the

place is a dump. Customers complaining, too. Their story is supported by other accounts in the media. I believe it.

"Enjoy your stay" (I'm sure you meant "stay" and not "dtay") sounds like one of those comments that means I'll get banned from DU. So are you saying all DU'ers, Democrats, progressives, etc. must take the side of the protesters? Is that the loyalty test now?

8. Actually there is a fair amount of civil disobedience which

by definition involves breaking the law, normally minor violations that do not harm anyone.
