Why would people camp out to get a phone that will be available to everyone in two or three months?

I recall the hoo-ha over those Cabbage Patch dolls back in the 80s.

All because their little darlings wanted one. Or, in some cases, the kids didn't care, but the parents thought they were neat.

I still use my first generation iPhone as an "iPod touch" to take to the gym with me. I just gave my iPod nano from 2006 to a friend, and it works as well as the day it was purchased.

As someone pointed out, they do keep working. It's really "our" kind of thing, rather than selling your one generation old Apple product you give it to a friend or relative to enjoy. The real world does intrude on this altruistic pursuit occasionally, I gave my first gen iPhone to a nephew who immediately sold it. His Christmas presents have been fairly non-existent since then though. :)

I gave my 3G to a friends 11 year old daughter who not only became the coolest kid in her class but still treasures it to this day. Her mother gets my iPhone 4 when I am eligible to upgrade in December.
