An email from my wife to her mom regarding OWS:

Quick background:

My mother-in-law is a lovely woman, who did not get a chance to go to college because she married at 19 and began a family. She divorced and remarried a big-hearted, very religious postman who listens to Faux News and occasionally gambles away more than he can afford. They get by, but are most certainly the 99% although they haven't exactly figured it out yet.

Hi mom:

On Saturday, we went to a peaceful demonstration in <our neighborhood> (we went to Wall Street last week). We were with about 100 people from our community, teachers, librarians, accountants, nurses, post office workers, union workers, bank tellers and students. It was normal, non-political people peacefully protesting our current corrupt banking system, coming together to raise awareness and make our leaders listen. We want to end tax cuts to the elite 1%, end corruption in our banking system, promote job growth in THIS country, and invest in a future for our children. Our government gave millions of our tax dollars to car companies, banks and wall street because THEY made bad business decisions. No one is bailing out the victims, the middle class people who are losing their homes and losing their entire savings and retirement accounts. I am an optimist and believe people can make a difference and bring about change. I have equal rights because a past generation of women spoke up. So I am speaking up for my son's future, I'm out there mostly for him.

I would never put my <boy> in harms way. The demonstration in wall street was filled with people just like you and me with kids just like <ours>. And, I spoke to people who were down there before I went so I knew what to expect . I just thought I would explain it to you from my side.

11. Her demeanor is the only reason I have the good fortune to be married.

Unfortunately grandma gets way too wrapped up in boogeyman tales. Pics of her grandson at the protests have her worried he will be trampled or shot or something. Some of here fears are founded in experience however. She was the neighbor to Jeffrey Miller's mother. Jeffrey Miller was shot at Kent State when my wife was an infant, so grandma is very scared.

It's so nice that your family is clearly willing to try to get along despite your political differences. You describe your in-laws very understandingly and lovingly, and your wife clearly wrote her e-mail with sympathy for her mom's point of view.
