(10-25) 12:59 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Hundreds of protesters have gathered in San Francisco's South of Market area this morning for President Obama's fundraising luncheon, all speaking out on a variety of the president's policies.

Most of the protesters outside the W Hotel during the president's $7,500-a-plate noon fundraiser were organized by CREDO Mobile, rallying against the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline across the Midwest.

Nancy Feinstein, a management consultant from Berkeley, attended the rally to protest the pipeline - even though she said she walked precincts for Obama in Florida.

"I found myself unable to contribute to his campaign this time," she said...

...Mary Rose LeBaron, a San Francisco State student, said she is disappointed with the president's environmental policies.

"I'm not sure," she said, when asked if she would vote for him again in 2012.

Medical marijuana advocates protested the recent federal crackdown on medicinal cannabis. They held a news conference about an hour before the fundraiser and announced that they are preparing a 2012 ballot initiative to increase state regulations on medical marijuana dispensaries.

Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, said he was part of the "loyal opposition" to Obama and asked him to "reign in" the Department of Justice. Federal prosecutors have sent warning letters to California dispensary owners and landlords, threatening criminal charges and forfeiture of property. Some Bay Area pot clubs have said they'll close because of the threats.

4. Guess Obama might have to start barring people from his public

events like Bush did. I remember Bush had zones that he made so any "troublemakers" were well away from where he was speaking and at the same time any tv cameras.

It's a shame that Obama is becoming so unpopular he might have to start copying Bush in this regard.

16. I was actually at the State Department's last public hearing on the issue.

I saw how the pro-pipeline forces trucked in "labor" representatives to the hearing to voice their opinions in favor of the pipeline because it it will "provide jobs".

Iknow you were speaking euphemistically, but this has to be stopped. No amount of gas price reduction (never happens) or jobs (may happen once in a while) is worth this.



Thousands Plan to Protest Keystone Pipeline

Thousands of people are gearing up for November 6 when they will encircle the White House in Washington, D.C., to protest the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Their message to President Obama? Tar sands oil is not in the national interest and that he must deny the presidential permit for the 1,700 mile Keystone XL pipeline, which runs from Canada through the United States to Mexico.



The Sierra Club has said that this is one of the most important environmental issues confronting Obama. The oil, according to environmentalists, is some of the dirtiest, most destructive oil in the world and could threaten drinking water as well as farmers and ranchers. Even some Tea Party activists in Texas have aligned with environmentalists to protest the pipeline. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's State Department, too, has a say in the pipeline. (TransCanada's main lobbyist for the pipeline was deputy manager of Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.)



The clean air advocates plan to highlight this conflict of interest during the rally. More importantly, they say, that this will be a real test for Obama to stand his ground as he is going into the 2012 campaign. The issue affects several heartland states like Nebraska, which Obama barely won in 2008. If he sells them out on this, they may not turn out in 2012 to pull the lever for him. "He needs a big win, not just a bunch of proposed EPA regs that haven't been finalized such as the mercury rule and the ozone rule," says one environmentalist involved in the issue.

Nebraska to vote on Keystone pipeline

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman has called a special session of the state legislature to decide whether to try to block the $7-billion Keystone pipeline.

Heineman, a Republican, said Nebraska should force TransCanada to change the route so it doesn't cross the eco-sensitive Sandhills and the vast Ogallala Aquifer on its way to refineries on the Gulf Coast of Texas.

The U.S. State Department is in the final stages of a three-year decision-making process on whether to grant TransCanada a "presidential permit" to go ahead with the pipeline.

But Heineman, who fears a major spill would harm Nebraska's environment and water supply, said the state's residents deserve a say in determining the project's fate...
