Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan condemns killing of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi

Controversial Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan condemned the killing of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi on Tuesday, warning that America and other Western powers will soon face severe consequences for their support of the uprising that led to the dictator's death.

"I know something of the good of Moammar Gadhafi that made me to love him as a brother and to feel a great sense of loss at his assassination," Farrakhan said during a two-hour interview with radio host Cliff Kelley on WVON-AM.

Later in the show, he said: "Gadhafi died in honor, fighting for the Libya that he believed in."

Farrakhan and Gadhafi, who was killed Thursday by rebels in his hometown of Sirte, were allies for decades. Gadhafi was buried Tuesday in a secret grave in the Libyan desert.

These words:

"Now, Moammar Gadhafi and his sons lie dead," Farrakhan said. "Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and his sons lie dead. Well, what about your sons?

"They're dying in Iraq on the basis of a lie. They're dying in Afghanistan on the basis of a lie. And now (U.S. military) drones are in Pakistan, drones in Somalia, drones in Yemen. When will it stop? America, do you think that you can get away with this?"


I have to agree with Minister Farrakhan's assessment here. We really should be ashamed of this war-mongering for oil.

And Farrakhan's "point" is not merely that Gadhaffi's killing was a bad precedent - arguably so, but no more so than e.g. Mussolini's - but that Gadhafi was a good man.

I believe he was taken out so he can be replaced with someone who is more amenable to the West and the oil companies. For instance --

On January 25, 2009, Muammar Al Gaddafi announced that his country was studying the nationalisation of foreign companies due to lower oil prices.

"The oil-exporting countries should opt for nationalisation because of the rapid fall in oil prices. We must put the issue on the table and discuss it seriously," said Gaddafi.

"Oil should be owned by the State at this time, so we could better control prices by the increase or decrease in production," said the Libyan leader.

Also, he taxed the oil:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Western oil companies are eager to jump back into Libya, but without strong oil laws there they are hesitant to invest the billions of dollars needed to boost production.

Before the fighting broke out, the country produced about 1.6 million barrels of oil per day. Of that, the Libyan National Oil Company controlled about 1.1 million.

A handful of Western oil companies, including Italy's Eni (E), France's Total (TOT) and ConocoPhillips (COP, Fortune 500), Marathon (MRO, Fortune 500), Hess (HES, Fortune 500) and Occidental (OXY, Fortune 500) account for most of the remaining oil, with Eni being the largest player.

But under Moammar Gadhafi the terms of those deals were strict. The dictator effectively imposed a 93% tax on any oil the companies produced in Libya.

25. We'll see what happens - you and I can make our guesses, but the end result will be looking

back in a year or two and see who is installed to run the country, and what they do with the oil. The fact that they are writing Sharia law into their constitution leads me to believe there is not going to be more freedom for their people, particularly for women. As to the oil supply and taxes, we'll have to see how that comes out.

I don't think anyone is crying over the deaths of Gaddafi, bin Laden, or Saddam Hussein. But I do think there is a reason we targeted those countries, and I'd really rather see our resources put into developing sustainable energy and infrastructure right here at home. Obviously PNAC-oriented folks are going to disagree.

Further, although I don't love the idea of a pipeline going down through Canada/US from Alberta (and maybe the Arctic), I am hoping that will at least cut down on the middle east bloodshed.

So, that is my position.
