"Liberal" art not welcome in Arizona.

I was so disturbed by this I had to share with y’all. I know there are some artists here that I’d love to hear from. Do me a favor and give your two cents at the link. Use a fake phone and name. They really don’t care.

While I wasn’t a fan of the bench, the city snuck in during the night and removed it without notifying the artist or the public. The town I live in has been called the “Reddest city in Arizona”. In my opinion, this was nothing but an attack on “Liberal” art (since it didn’t include a picture of Jesus). I feel terrible for this woman. I’m no artist, but I’ve known plenty. She was proud of this bench and put a piece of her soul into it. If someone snuck onto the Courthouse grounds and removed the “Merry Christmas” banner, we’d all be strip searched and interrogated. But, because it was done by our local “government”, it’s okay.

Save us.

I'm fairly certain I know which editor wrote this. He's our voice of reason and has a Jon Stewartesque outlook and humor.

2. I feel bad for her

but it's a hideous bench.

Also, I noticed a star of David. Many people here would object to religious symbols in public places, especially if those symbols are Christian.

Ultimately it is up to the Parks Department, the purchaser of the artwork, over what they are going to approve, and city government should answer to the people of the city.

I don't think she has a leg to stand on, but I do feel bad for her. I have made things myself that got big thumbs down. Once I power sanded a table and then painted a chess board on it. I wasn't even happy with the results myself. Another time I made a bunch of A-frame bookshelves for my bookstore. First, a carpenter friend told me they were tacky. Then later, when it was time to move, it seemed like my dad and my brother-in-law could not wait to tear them apart. I thought a few of them could have and should have been saved, but it seemed like my own dad was eager to tear apart the things I had made, even though that process was a tremendous amount of work. My shelves may have looked crude, but they were sturdy. My two desctuctive helpers had to spend about two days of hard work to tear five shelves apart.

But, what disturbs me the most is how they snuck around in the middle of the night to remove it. Now, they're saying they don't need to explain their actions. I feel like the town I live in is run by the Gestapo. Waiting for some of our local Occupy Prescott folks to start disappearing in the night. :eyes:

5. It's the town.

You should have seen the uproar a couple of years ago about a mural that was painted on a school. The main "character" was modeled after a Hispanic boy that attended the school. Some of the comments were about why would they paint a picture of a "black" child when there are so few "black" children in our town. You could probably find it if you search for "Mural Mice Miller Valley". I'd do it for you, but I can't search on my computer. :(
