Exxon begins process to extract broken pipeline from the Yellowstone

Exxon has brought in a team of dive and salvage experts to complete the job. They'll secure the pipeline, which will then be sent to a third party for independent analysis, she said.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, or PHMSA, is investigating the break.

PHMSA's report also will likely play a role in a class action lawsuit brought by eight home and property owners against Exxon last month. The suit asks for a jury trial and unspecified punitive damages from Exxon for long-term harm to their land and businesses.
