Russell Pearce Recall Election: Arizona Immigration Law Architect Defeated By Jerry Lewis

In Arizona, state Sen. Russell Pearce, architect of the tough immigration law that put the state at the forefront of the national debate, faced a recall attempt led by a fellow Republican. He was defeated by challenger Jerry Lewis on Tuesday night.
Pearce held a 3-to-1 fundraising advantage.

Pearce concedes in recall election
PHOENIX - Mesa voters ousted Senate President Russell Pearce tonight, completing the first-ever recall of a state elected official in Arizona.
Challenger Jerry Lewis, also a Republican, had a strong lead, results late Tuesday showed . A small percentage of people also cast ballots for Olivia Cortes even though she withdrew from the race after facing questions and legal challenges to the legitimacy of her candidacy.
Pearce said he was disappointed, saying he will spend some time "with my family and my God" before deciding what to do next. He has not ruled out another run - including to get his old seat back,.
He noted that this was an unusual race, with no primary. That allowed all voters, including the district's Democrats and independents, to make the final decision.
"This is going around the primary process," Pearce said.
