The news readers seem to be gobsmacked that the Egyptian protests aren't being led by radical Muslims. Which I see as a direct indictment of the conditioning we Americans have been bombarded with for the last 40 years. That religion has played no part in any of this just doesn't register. (all I keep hearing about all of this is "How is the going to affect Israel" on my teevee) Most of the news readers don't know how to deal with this action at all. That a muslim people are simply demanding a Government that respects human rights goes against much of the bullshit they've been fed, and happily gobbled. Jeebus but we're a propagandized country.
There is no opposition figure, there is no leader. The people just want a fucking government that works. Unfortunately there is no easy way to get to where they want to be. The protesters don't know how to go about it, they're just sick of the status quo. It's going to take time, and sweeping reform. Democracy is a messy business. And the key is that all of this must be done by the Egyptians. They've taken a nice first step on a journey that will take years.
I wish them the best.
