Racist CCC’s Comic Book Complaint: The Gods Must be Crazy

The white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) is calling for a boycott of the upcoming movie “Thor,” based on the Marvel comic book story and directed by Kenneth Branagh. One would think that a film fantasy about a Nordic god (played by blond, blue-eyed Australian actor Chris Hemsworth) performing heroic acts would have a racist group like the CCC squealing with delight.

Not so. The CCC is upset about the casting of British actor Idris Elba, who is black, as Heimdall, the all-seeing, all-hearing sentry of Asgard, one of the nine worlds of Norse mythology. After all, Heimdall is supposed to be a Nordic god and, as such, he’s supposed to be white, the CCC declares.

Only in the warped worldview of a group like the CCC could the Hollywood depiction of a nonhuman fictional character derived from mythology as imagined by comic book writers be seen as a racial affront.

2. Meh, I kind of thought the "Prince of Persia" should've looked Persian, so I see the complaint--

...BUT-- since just about every other cultural hero (regardless of origin) is played by an anglo actor, I'd seems a bit weird to complain about something like this. I mean it's a comic book movie, for Christ's sake. It's not like it's Beowulf.

that Asgard has a special significance in Norse mythology. There is a local motorcycle club here called Asgard and they have a reputation as a rough and tough bunch. I've heard from people who have been around them that they really don't care for non-whites, GLBT people, etc. I think Asgard is the resting place of the warriors and for the sentry of that place to be a black man is unthinkable to them. I know, it's crazy shit.

Each god has their own hall. The place that most warriors go is to Valhalla. There they get to feast and party every night. When they wake, they are able to go and battle each other, preparing for the day they will be called on to aid the gods against the Frost Giants. A fair number of the fallen warriors are taken to Freya's hall. Other spirits may be allowed to live in different halls, based on the god or goddess and that persons life on Midgard.

This is a movie and Marvel has changed many things, for instance, Thor is a red head not a blond.

11. You're confusing it with Valhalla.

Asgard is the home of the Gods in Norse mythology, as Jotunheim is the home of the Giants, Midgard the home of men, and so on. Dead warriors go to Valhalla, which is one hall within Asgard, and is anything but a resting-place...
