Clash over beauty queen title turns ugly (Beauty queen fails to lose weight, is late to events)

The winner of last year's Miss San Antonio pageant filed suit Monday to keep her crown after pageant organizers told her to give it back for being late to events, failing to lose weight, insubordination and other alleged conduct unbecoming a beauty queen.

Domonique Ramirez, 17, obtained a temporary restraining order that bars the Miss Bexar County Organization Inc., which runs the Miss San Antonio pageant, from promoting first runner-up Ashley Dixon.

Dixon is already being called Miss San Antonio on the organization's website, and the organization is adamant that she's going to stay there.

Ramirez has racked up numerous violations, and neither she nor her parents would cooperate with the group's requests, board president Linda Woods said.

This is part of the problem with beauty pageants. There is no way this girl is overweight.

Let's take a look at the other side of the story, here.

"Ramirez graduated from O'Connor High School a year early and was planning to study criminal justice and psychology with the help of the scholarship that comes with being Miss San Antonio, according to published reports. But when she won the crown, she didn't have her driver's license and didn't know her way around the city, the lawsuit states.

Vera said Ramirez's parents, a clerk at Baptist Health System and an aircraft sheet metal mechanic, were hardworking folks whose schedules often kept them from taking their daughter to appearances, which he said the organization demanded at the last minute. But the contract prohibits them from being present at any of the events, Vera said."

Ramirez enlisted the help of the League of United Latin American Citizens, which filed the lawsuit on her behalf. LULAC's national legal counsel, Luis Vera Jr., said the pageant changed leadership in November and that its new board concocted lies about Ramirez and her parents.
