Lawyers cry foul over leak of Julian Assange sex-case papers

Another supporter close to the WikiLeaks founder said the leak appeared designed by the authorities in Sweden to jeopardise Mr Assange's defence. "There has been a selective smear through the disclosure of material. That material, in Swedish, was passed to a journalist at The Guardian," a source said. "The timing appears to have been cynically calculated to have the material published in the middle of the bail application and the appeal."

Mr Assange, 39, was arrested and held in custody at Wandsworth prison in south London after Sweden issued an extradition request. He was released on bail last week after a High Court judge dismissed an appeal by the British authorities, on behalf of the Swedes, to overturn an earlier decision to free him.

between people who are going about the business of vast populations without appropriate conduct, and the very private and intimate activities of a single person?

9. The Swedish police are an institution that must operate

with total transparency, despite any costs. Baring their internal documents will help to destroy them. Isn't that Assange's institutional argument about power?

Besides, police reports of intimate details are not generally private anyway, when an individual has been indicted for a crime. (No matter what you may think of Sweden's particular criminal code regarding sex, which is highly protective of women and progressive in giving them rights women don't have here.)

Do you make no distinctions about the repercussions to an individual when you see remarks all over the Internet bashing these women, disbelieving them, calling them names? You should. Perhaps you haven't heard of the recent story that was publicized in my city very much in the last few weeks. A young coed accused a Notre Dame football player of rape; the school didn't investigate in a timely manner; she was threatened and harrassed by the player's teammates. She committed suicide. Questioning women can have dire consequences, too.

have to be "being guilty of sleeping with two women who found out about each other".

Sweden may be protective of witnesses who are not Assange but didn't Michael Moore's letter show they are not great at investigating, prosecuting or getting conviction for sex crimes?

And all these leaks may confuse people about Assange but they don't make the prosecution's case any better. They can leak all they want, it just makes them look terrible and unprofessional.

But it wouldn't matter: all files everywhere should be opened and scrutinized, because institutions of power must be destroyed. Including the Swedish Police (and, because it, too, is an institution, WikiLeaks).

Assange stayed in Sweden for weeks before he was given permission to travel to the UK but the prosecutors did not move the case forward.

And actually, the prosecutor's leaks will only help Assange in the long run. Maybe in the short run, too, when they cross the line and the thing has to be tossed out. I say, let 'em go for it. :)

of the art of missing the point.

You suggested that releasing government documents that reveal bad behavior by officials acting on behalf of the people is somehow the same as the release of personal information about an individual's private business.

While I understand that the accusations have brought out such information, there is simply no comparison between the efforts of a man to expose government malfeasance and the release of information about allegations of rape.

I am sensing a theme from you though. It would appear you are not familiar with the details of these allegations, otherwise your apparent defense of these women would seem very strange.

You do realize that these allegations are essentially bullshit, right?
