Anyone know where to get some serious dental care cheaply? I haven't had insurance since the second year of my lyme diagnosis and my teeth have deteriorated to jagged pieces and roots that are abcessed. I was hoping we would have got a better health care bill but...Being unemployed for almost three years has made it impossible to pay for.

I know nothing about Ohio, but know that decades ago, my husband got excellent but cheaper dental services at one of the NYC colleges - I think NYU. There may be someone here who knows from personal experience what is available - which I don't.

6. For non-contacts (glasses) you'll need your interpupitary distance. THIS IS GREAT FOR KIDS.

I don't want to bury this last bit but these services are GREAT if you have kids. The "insurance" you'd buy at Pearl costs more than a new pair of glasses at one of these online places! It takes the sting out of hearing your kid lost / broke their glasses.

As for the interpupitary distance, your optometrist uses that ruler that goes on your nose, but I read of some people using a ruler (with mm) to measure. If you still have the order receipt for an old pair of glasses it should be on it.

Once you're an adult, however, your interpupitary distance doesn't change, so once you know it, you're set for life.

I've bought two pair from Canada's http://www.eyebuydirect.com . My one pair cost $42 with UV, scratch and glare free coatings (these often go for $50 EACH). That included a pair of coordinated clip-on sunglasses, carrying case and shipping.

BTW: these glasses are BETTER than my $250 pair which always popped screws and lenses popped out all the time.

My other pair I bought from http://www.eyebuydirect.com were prescription readers. At $17, however, having lost them, I will simply order another pair. Try doing THAT elsewhere!

I'm on my second round of glasses from Zenni.

Even though I have insurance to get my eyes examined and a hundred dollar credit towards frames and lenses, Zenni's prices are significantly less expensive than I can get at my Kaiser optical department.

I have a pair of progressive lens sunglasses and a regular pair of progressive lens glasses. The frames are light-weight and sturdily constructed, the lenses are comparable to anything I've ever had before.

The frames and lenses are made in China ... but so is my television, my computer, etc.

Save yourselves some money, folks.

and I've got four or five more lying around. A couple of them were broken and one I can't find.

The cheaper ones are a bit fragile, but for 6 bucks and up, who cares? I break glasses all the time and I'd rather break a $6 pair than a $200 pair.

I found Zenni about the time I stopped wearing contacts, and they've been great all along.

20. Does Zenni offer photochromatic lenses?

I found the options for anti-glare and sunglass tint coatings on their site, but I'm not sure I can get photochromatic lenses (the ones that darken in response to sunlight, and lighten up indoors) -- a "must have" for me.

The eyebuydirect site specifies that they have the photochromatic option, but I'm unclear with the Zenni site. Can any Zenni users clarify for me whether Zenni offers it, too? Many thanks!!

I've gotten two pairs from Zenni, readers and bifocals. They're great, they're the real thing, they're cheap. Several other sites online offer the same. You can even upload your picture and do a virtual try-on.

I found out about this from a recent article on Alternet, The Eyewear Industry Is an Incredible Ripoff, But There Are Alternatives.

Apparently, the eyeglasses industry is a worldwide monopoly held by an Italian company called Luxottica. They own and operate LensCrafters, Sears Optical, Target Optical, and Pearle Vision, just to name a few. This lets them keep prices gougingly high.

Unless I was really hard up for cash, I'd stick with my local optical shop that I've been patronizing for 25 years. They have always done superb work, and are there to help out if I have a problem. If I bend something, lose a nose pad, etc. they fix it for free without an appointment.

26. When I lived in Santa Barbara

There was a place called The Eyeglass Factory and they had amazing prices. Now that I live in SF, its hard to find any place worthy of them. One place I did go to, had nice prices but it took several weeks before you got your new glasses back. I guess they shipped them somewhere to be made.

CHEAP, and good quality. They ship within days.Only drawback is, sometimes the frames look good, but when you put them on, they're just not you. At these prices, order a fe styles and use the 'not you' ones for fishing or temps.
