You don't use locals to put down locals, after all. Mercenaries work much better for that.

This sounded like a more organized attack. Also Gaddafi was reportedly to give a televised speech from there, and I don't think he'd be placing his safety in the hands of people who shoot wildly and without direction.

3. There was a protester on AJe this morning that said

there was a force of about a thousand mercs involved in a battle, with big guns but I'm sorry, didn't recognize the city name. So, it looks like it isn't just small groups of thugs but also bigger, more organized forces, too.
