Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has ordered that state employees on temporary labor contracts be given permanent jobs, in another apparent bid to insulate the kingdom from a wave of protests in the Arab world.

The top oil exporter has so far escaped major protests against poverty, corruption and oppression that have spread through the region, toppling entrenched leaders in Egypt and Tunisia and reaching neighbors Bahrain and Oman.
King Abdullah returned home on Wednesday from three months of medical treatment abroad for back treatment and unveiled benefits for Saudis worth around $36 billion to address social pressures such as unemployment and housing.

On Sunday, the king also ordered all Saudi nationals in temporary public sector jobs be given permanent employment, state news agency SPA said.

Last Friday, at least 50 people have been injured as security forces in Bahrain opened fire on protesters for a second straight day. Protesters who tried to march to the square on Friday described a chaotic scene of tear gas clouds, bullets coming from many directions and people slipping in pools of blood as they sought cover. Some claimed the gunfire came from either helicopters or sniper nests. The video shot by RT crew shows chanting protesters marching towards military vehicles before sustained gunfire erupts. Throngs of anti-government protesters took over the square earlier in the week, setting up a camp with tents and placards, but they were driven out by riot police in a deadly assault on Thursday that killed five people and injured more than 200.

Facebook has been a great help to the revolution but it is a goldmine for the popular social network. Indeed, King Abdullah of Saudi advised by Goldman Sachs has decided to offer $ 150 billion to purchase Facebook.

afrol News, 27 February - The planned resumption of mass protests in Djibouti this weekend was hindered by massive police presence in the capital and arrests of about 300 opposition and civil society leaders.

Friday 18 February saw an estimated 30,000 Djiboutians protesting in central Djibouti City. Their main demand was for President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh to step down, or at least refrain from standing candidate in the upcoming April elections.

A united Djiboutian opposition, supported by civil society and human rights groups, says President Guelleh's third term bid is unconstitutional. The regime only last year changed the constitution, removing the two-term limit, but this was done by a parliament without opposition members. The opposition boycotted the 2005 and 2008 polls as their demands for fair elections were not met.

The 18 February protest, following earlier student riots and spontaneous popular protests after earlier Friday prayers, was mainly organised by the Union for a Democratic Alternative (UAD) main opposition party. As darkness fell, the peaceful protest was violently dispersed by riot police, preventing the protesters from establishing a permanent protest camp in central Djibouti City.

Britain froze the assets of Muammar Gaddafi and his five children on Sunday evening at an emergency meeting of the Privy Council at Windsor castle presided over by the Queen.

The chancellor, George Osborne, acted amid reports that the Libyan leader had moved £3bn to Britain last week. In a separate cloak-and-dagger operation, £900m of Libyan currency was impounded in Britain.

Earlier ministers announced they had stripped the Gaddafi family of its diplomatic immunity in Britain.

A special meeting of the Privy Council at 5.15pm on Sunday approved an order in council freezing the assets of Gaddafi, his sons Saif al-Islam, Hannibal Muammar, Khamis Muammar, and Mutassim, and his daughter Aisha Muammar. The Times reported on Saturday that Gaddafi had deposited £3m with a Mayfair-based private wealth manager last week.
