I'm due to deliver the family's first grandchild any day now. There's no way to top that with a material gift, so we decided not to even bother.
My husband did get me a vacuum though. However, we're tongue-in-cheek referring to it as my literal "push present".

Less, way less.
The more the gov/companies squeeze, the less there is to spend.
Then the dumbshits will wonder why sales are lower.

Then grandparents send the kids a nice bunch of cash for the holidays. Three of them put it in the bank to save for emergencies (they are finally getting it!) and the youngest son's is burning a hole in his pocket, lol.
We not only spent less but also decorated less, which was NICE. We did more baking, however. :)

Having lost my job 2 months ago, piecemealing together paychecks since then, and just starting a new, full time job 2 weeks ago, I am just happy that I am able to do Christmas shopping. Since I am just getting my financial footing back, I find myself spending a little less than last year. I've asked my adult kids for lists of what they want so whatever I do buy I know that they will really want/use.

| 11. Spent less but gave more |
|
Gave time and had a personal growth project for Advent. Most of the gifts purchased were fair trade. gave donations in people's name and made a real effort to get to know people on my daily walks with my dogs. It may sound stupid but I think my the best gift I gave was to a gentleman that has always looked like he didn't have a friend in the world. It started with a good morning and a look of shock. Now that whole group of people look happier. Most of them are out of work but for at least a few seconds a day they are happy. I have been told it carries on.

Rather than buy a lot of impersonal stuff for the family, everyone is getting one store-bought present, and a Moebius scarf made specially for each one. I've been knitting frantically for a month, and finished the last of twelve scarves tonight.

But I cashed in my change jar to do it.
I usually cash it in every three months or so but I let it accumulate since May so I could add to my Christmas budget.
