| i've recently discovered the pacifica radio network |
|
i only listen to the radio when commuting in my car, and even then tend to prefer my cd collection. but occasionally i would listen to npr.
but every once in a while, i flip through the stations and one day i landed on a fantastic interview of cornell west and a -- get this -- a like-minded interviewer! i "saved" the station and have checked back every once in a while and learned that it was wbia, part of the pacifica network, and virtually every time i'm there, it's FAR closer to my attitudes and politics than even npr, which is supposedly "ultra-liberal" (though, of course, it certainly isn't now, if it ever was).
makes you realize just how far right the media is that something genuinely liberal is a rare discovery!

|
Edited on Sat Dec-25-10 02:16 PM by Madam Mossfern
and again for a bit in the 90's. Personally I think that they are the Yin to Fox's Yang. Somewhere in between there is balance. I work with someone who is a WBAI fan and he actually had no problem telling me that the Jews control the media and the economy. I asked him then why the hell was I slaving away in a cubicle across from his.

| 4. well i would certainly characterize them as liberal rather than balanced |
|
but then again, they don't CLAIM to be balanced, fair or otherwise; the CLAIM to be progressive. so at least in that respect they're different from foxnews.
i hadn't heard and anti-semitism on the air, at least, but i have heard some, "conspiracy theories" that i have a hard time signing on to, but i'm at least glad their finding airplay somewhere.

| 13. Liberal IS balanced. Is there a way to 'balance' views on |
|
torture, eg? I can't think of a way to balance views on war crimes, they just are crimes. And I would hope that that isn't just a Liberal view, but in this country with its party loyalists on both sides, no matter what the crime, it will be defended by one group or the other depending on their party affiliation.
I just discovered the station also about a week ago and found it to be very balanced, mentally balanced as opposed to the insanity of our MSM who either ignore war crimes altogether, a sign of a very mentally unbalanced country, or they speak about them in a 'pragmatic' way, which I guess is what is now known as 'balanced' news in this sad country.
The rape of children in Iraq. How does one talk about that in a balanced way? I suppose ignoring it altogether is one way.
The station I listened had on people who actually were in possession of FACTS. They were speaking about Wikileaks and actually knew the history and goals of the organization. Balanced? They stated facts, how do you balance facts? With lies?

| 16. opposing torture isn't "liberal", or at least wasn't liberal. hell, it wasn't even political until |
|
shrub came along and pretended it was the right thing to do. absolutely astounding. used to be, opposing torture was considered neither liberal nor conservative but simply "civilized" or "american". the only freakazoids who supported torture simply did it quietly and did their best to hide it, knowing they're be thrown in jail if they were caught. now they get airtime to claim it was the legal and right thing to do and no one blinks an eye.

| 24. Their point of view depends on the program. More of their |
|
programming is progressive. But they are not rude to people with whom they disagree.
Democracy Now and several other programs really get a mix of viewpoints. Each is given a good opportunity to speak without constant argument and silly bickering. That is refreshing.

| 21. Really, like what? Like opposing the Israeli Government's brutal and illegal policies |
|
towards Palestinians? Why should that government be exempt from criticism for its undeniable war crimes against the Palestinians? If you think decent people anywhere are going to be silent about any government engaging in the kind of war crimes that Israel's government has been doing, you are going to be very disappointed. I would like to see more of that on our MSM and I would like to see our government stop supporting that government with our tax dollars. I object strenuously to my taxes going to governments such as Isreal's or Uzbekistan's or Azairbaijan or any other government that uses it to cause suffering to other human beings.
This nonsense that Israel should be treated differently for other nations is getting a little old and in fact, IS, anti-semitic. They want to be viewed as a legitimate, sovereign nation, then they get criticized like every other such nation.

Look up Kwaku Person-Lynn and the African Mental Liberation Weekend. Then look up some of their programing that was connected to La Voz de Aztlan.

| 25. That is the problem with Pacifica. They are unreasonably |
|
anti-Israel. The anti-Israel propaganda is just way beyond the pale. You'd think there was only one point of view to the issues concerning Israel. And forget about the history of Palestine, the close relationship between some of the leaders of the Palestinians during WWII and the NAZIs and the like. You will not hear about that on Pacifica. Otherwise I like the station.

| 11. Our Pacifica station has become almost uniformly awful. |
|
It was a quality, professional news and affairs service in the 80s and early 90s, but it's become amateurish, strident, Balkanized, and completely identity-politics driven now. One hopes WBAI is better than KPFK, though from what I've heard it may be even worse.

I get kind of tired of their afternoon health programs but other than that it is very interesting. I don't by any means always agree with the statements made on their programs, but they are thought-provoking.

And because it doesn't depend on corporate advertising revenue, they are free to have a decidedly anti-war flavor, as well as frequent programs that highlight the ownership of our government by corporate interests.

I listen to KPFK out of LA every morning on the way to work. They're great. NPR has veered further and further to the right in the last decade or so. Pacifica is the real thing.
