not meaning to sound melodramatic and I'm not asking for any pizza (although more frozen food in the fridge would be reassuring). It just surprising how hard this is.

The first of the post holiday works schedules are coming out and it looks like I'm sliding from 4/5 days a week to 3/4. That means everything not a hard core basic (food, roof, transportation,...) goes.

I won't miss the TV at all, hardly turn it on any more; but the internet feels like chopping off a finger (or two:evilgrin:). While I'll be able to use the connection at the Library for bill paying, etc...(until funding for that is cut off:grr:) time to read and enjoy DU will be limited or nonexistent.

To those of you who listened to my occasional comments, thank you.

Been there myself more then once the last few years. Don't forget though a number of places have free internet access, the library, some fast food joints, you can sit in the parking lot and access for free :D Good luck!

After all, at some point we did have low speed Internet (think AOL, Prodigy, etc) and survived it.

At least some laptops have modems, right? The older ones, that is...

And some desktops have embedded modems...

6. If you live near

a McDonalds or an apartment complex, and have a laptop, you can wi fi from there.

You don't even have to park in the parking lot. I live a spit's throw from a McDonalds. When my internet goes down and I need to use the computer, I drive to the little ATM bank across the street and catch the connection.

If the apartment complex is gated, they usually provide cable for the people that live there. I used to sit in the car lot near a complex and get on the laptop.

It's that way in my area. Might be like that for you. Just something to think about.

13. I'm amazed with the number of unprotected wifi connections

around me. All of those networks are on Channels 1, 6, or 11. That makes it easy for me to pick an uncluttered channel.

Buy stuff at yard sales and sell it on Ebay. I had a friend who did this for years.

If you're in a large city, check to see if there are market research firms that pay you to be a panelist. I've done a few, offering consumer opinions on everything from doughnuts to window coverings. Some pay $100 or more for a couple hours of work, though only on an occasional basis.

Make something you can sell - jewelry, artwork, refinished furniture.

Register with a temp agency; they'll call you for work assignments that can be just for the day. Examples: filling in for a secretary or receptionist who's out sick, giving out product samples at a supermarket, etc.

there must be something that will make up for just one day's wages a week.

Surprisingly a lot of good ideas here. And you'd be surprised who might want to get rid of an old laptop (they are almost all WiFi ready). Schools and businesses can't GIVE the old stuff away. Put up a few flyers saying you'd be willing to take an old laptop off someone's hands because there is a LOT of free WiFi, even in our small town. I know if you are trying to just get the bills paid you may not want to frog around here blowing time, but it does provide a connection.
