| When I was growing up...they wanted to build a nuclear plant in Palo Verde. |
|
If I remember correctly, I wore a t-shirt that said "VOTE NO FOR PROPOSITION 10". It was white with great big black block letters. There were protesters. Many were upset about this monstrosity being placed in their backyard.
I was in elementary school.
Proposition 10 passed. Locals sold the land to Bechtel and the nuclear plant was built. We even took a field trip there before it went online. I remember it being massive and I remember the farmers that sold the land became overnight millionaires.
I remember when I was a kid they wanted to build a prison in Perryville. There were protesters.
They built the prison. People didn't want this prison in their backyard.
I remember when I was an adult living in Texas.
Prisons were being built statewide. Towns desperate for jobs bid on these prisons. They WANTED them. They NEEDED them.
Isn't that what all of this is really about??
To bust us down to desperation that we beg for things we know are not good for us--but we need them anyway? In good times, we have the option to say NO we don't want these. In bad times, not so much.

| 1. To make you so desperate, you'll do anything to survive. |
