Cory Booker and Chris Christie deal with the blizzard in New Jersey

In the wake of the blizzard that blanketed the Northeast yesterday, let's take a look at how elected officials in New Jersey are coping with the disaster.

First, the Democratic mayor of Newark, Cory Booker:

He delivered diapers to a housebound mother:



... he hit the streets, shovel in hand:



... and yes, he was even there for a woman in labor:



As for Republican Gov. Chris Christie, his state was just hit with a massive blizzard -- so what was he going to do next? What else? He went to Disney World!

But to be fair, he did manage to get a tweet out between Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean:

9. Uh....no he's not.

Booker is doing what he has to do and doing it best he can because he is a good guy. But he's not going against Christie he is working fairly closely with him on a lot of things and they are far from adverserial, much to my chagrin. But as I mentioned in my other posts I understand why Booker has to do what he has to do on that front and I don't hold it against thim. He's in a tough spot and needs the resources and support that Christie unfortunately holds the strings for.

I'd love to see him take on Christie because I think he's head and shoulders above him with regard to intelligence, savvy, and sincerity, as well as life experience. I think a head to head match up would only make Christie look even more foolish. But I don't think Cory is ready or willing to go down that road. Maybe he one day will be but I can't see it being any time soon.

But he's still a hell of a lot better public official than Christie.

Any time we can get a member of the party who LITERALLY is working hard for the people, I dont think it helps us much to put him to a progressive purity test.

My point was that you said he was kicking Christie's butt and your other post implied he was going to take him on politically in 2013 (if that's not what you meant about the 2013 Governer's race being interesting then I apologize) and that's just not the case. As I said he's doing what he has to do for the city of Newark and that's play nice with Christie. I understand why he's doing so and don't hold it against him. But he's nowhere near ready, willing, or able to kick Christie's sizable posterior in any way shape or form.

14. He acted ready when I last saw him speak

My friend and I worked on his re-election in May and in his victory speech, he hinted about heading to Trenton and eventually Washington.

When we saw him campaign for Corzine in 2009 he struck us as the next Obama but with a bullshit detector that Obama lacks (Cory Booker would never put up with the teabaggers calling him a socialist, etc).

17. Hey, I hope he does.

I like the guy and think he'd be a great statewide and national politician. It just seems that for right now he's focusing on the job at hand which for him continues to be cleaning up the city of Newark in every way he can.

20. I think he will run in 2013

It's been my gut feeling since I saw him in 2009. There are other NJ Democrats who disagree with me though. Time will tell.

I know that he cares first and foremost about Newark. He turned down a chance to be Corzine's LG and in Obama's cabinet because he wanted to finish his 1st term in Newark (2nd term is another story).

In my opinion he has what it takes to make it to the White House.

3. Cory Booker IS A BEAST!!!!!!

Just based on the time of his Tweets, not only was he out literally shoveling snow all day yesterday, he went to bed late and got up early. Apparently injured his back moving a car, says "back killing me: Breakfast: Advil and diet coke"


And this is typical of him even on a sunny day. It's a regular thing for someone to Tweet "Mayor, the red light is out on 8th and Cherry" and for him to reply, "I'm on it!" ... and even before the bizzard he was out with his police force chasing down car jackers.

6. Booker is a good guy...

I disagree with him on a fair bit (some of it just tactics, but a lot of it specific policy) but there's no doubt in my mind that he's a sincere, dedicated, good individual. He's just fighting one of the biggest uphill battles you could ever want to face and that gives him certain insights and perspectives to which my opinion is little more than abstract wishful thinking and his is based on cold hard reality that he sees every day.

I wish he weren't forced through pragmatism and circumstance to be so chummy with Christie, but I also understand that it's part of the job and it's what he needs to do for the people of Newark.

They seemed to worship the ground that he walked on (even Democrats did).

I told them that they've been sold a bill of goods because the media loves him so much and that if KY wanted him they could have him.
