....anyone else but who he is, this subject would have begun as a mention on DU, then disappeared before the day was out. People love celebrity bashing to feed the need to boost their egos. Had Vick been a janitor, office worker, or any of the "ordinary" class, the mistreatment of animals would still be mostly ignored except for those with the genuine passion and compassion, who by the way, are usually ignored anyway. Dogfighting is still going on, and it's going on everywhere, but unless it's a Vick, or some other "big time celebrity" it's on the back burner of most. Fame is the name of the game, not the crime. The willingness to admit though, is hard for some to do. Thanks. quickesst

| 19. Well as it was explained to me this afternoon |
|
as I still don't get it.
Celebrity (who came from the projects, but still celebrity) who tortured (people who engage in dog fighting might disagree, and I disagree with them, but) dogs... = instant outrage.
There was ANOTHER NFL star who ran a person on his Bentley, horrible accident. He served 19 days and is back on the field. I did not know about that one until somebody else pointed it to me... since I really don't follow sports.... but there is no controversy. So we have a player who killed somebody else... no controversy. We have an ex-con who did dog fighting... instant outrage. Tells you a lot about what people think is important.
That said, the usual excuse, but they are role models... yep, and that is even more telling about the US than Vic and his adventures. We glorify people who play kid's games, and pay them very well... or kids who are part of the hollywood culture... but not oh people like Jonas Salk...

if you read up on it a little you would see the extent of it - electrocuting dogs that didn't perform properly, hanging them, beating them against the ground until they were dead, pulling the teeth from female Pits and tying them to rape stands in order to breed them at will - the list is very long of torture and murder of multiple dogs.

Vic a chance. Now let's be honest, you think it would have received ANY coverage if he called the owner of VON's at Paduka Winscoonsin and thanked him for giving a con a second chance?
Personally I doubt it.
This is why I think he thanked the OWNER... to try to encourage other EMPLOYERS to hire cons.
No, it could not be that simple, now could it? And we need to be outraged. I mean it is Vic who has committed the worst crimes known to man!

The original statement THANKED the Eagles owner for giving this player a second chance. It wasn't about his playing ability, but CHANCE. It was about possible redemption... but even that is a problem for many people here. I mean look at the pretty much faux outrage.
Admittedly this has been blown way out of proportion because yes, dogs were involved. One thing about DU... if dogs are involved... take cover. Kids take cover, the elderly take cover. Somehow not for homeless or the unemployed. Yes this place has changed in the last few years...
Hell if I had my way the NFL would have to establish it's own pipeline to get players... the way the NCAA treats it's college talent is a problem... and it goes also to the coaches and general attitudes.
Now to pay... it is a tad too high, except when you consider that many of these men will leave the gridiron and have problems finding work after that. No, not because of their abilities or lack off, but the closed brain injuries they keep getting. Either change the damn rules, or do the unthinkable. The whole average career is three years. Due to the position a QB players they have a longer career and usually better pay too.
Anyway the owners are killing the games... and I personally do not watch sports, well except the World Cup ONCE every four years. But in this case it WAS about redemption and giving OTHER people a chance.

As to the dogs, good for them. But this issue of jobs and ex-cons is far larger than vic, his crime, or the NFL. Look up the statistics just for shits and giggles.

|
the message was, thank you for hiring an ex con, not about Vic is a great player... which admittedly I have no clue. I don't watch sports.
Yeah a LOCAL nooz ran a feel good story years ago... of a kid who did five for armed robbery and ended up as a regional manager for Starbucks... that story was on the air for two news casts, since they had to produce it and all. It was a very local market story. Tell me, how many news cycles has this been around?
Using the bully pulpit includes those calculations, Granted they miss how it be received... at DU... I have yet to hear about it in the NOOZ or read about it at other sites. But so far we are at news cycle number four. Some of us did get it what this was about... which goes to the MESSAGING, and they suck at it. But hey they suck about messaging in general.

Don't accuse those of us who've followed this issue as being insincere, maybe you should lecture the people all over the board today who didn't give a flying fuck about this issue until they had to downplay Vick's actions in an attempt to defend a boneheaded move by Obama.

I am sure you would be happy if he became a janitor or other low paying job... that will teach the monster, RIGHT? I mean best case, better he not get a job, like 33% of cons. I am sure that please people even more, and no I do not mean any sarcasm here.
I don't watch sports, I don't care for sports, but this attitude is the same reason most cons CANNOT get a job when they get out.
