This is the extreme inequity that has many of us just shaking our heads. All the concern about Vick, who picks up his career with hardly missing a beat, when for the rest of us, it would be a devastating and likely permanent end to our careers. Certainly for any of us requiring licensure to practice.

Actually, I have a hard time thinking of myself as having a career*, so it's a tough question.
* even though I've been doing the same sort of thing for thirty years. It's been more a series of jobs, rather than a career
wow, that's depressing. Thirty years. I should be retiring about now, I think. Though I'm "only" 52, so a bit young for that, according to SS. I'm mentally and physically ready. :)

My career has been, at the very least, damaged by this recession and quite possibly over. Doing time would just be icing on the cake.

| 5. I could go right back to work after coming out of jail. |
|
As long as my dues were up to date. That's part of what it means to be in a union. They don't throw you out for committing a crime. I've worked with killers, drug dealers, corrupt convicted politicians and more. I would have zero problem resuming my career. Unless you are a pedo or something, no one cares.

It's hard to say, really. I know people in my industry with criminal records. I guess it depends how high up I was.

| 10. What is this "job security" that you speak of? |
|
And what does it have to do with this "career" that you speak of?...
There's always another job that doesn't give a shit if you have a record. They don't usually pay so well... but not much does these days, does it?...
If we're talking about Vick, why not also talk about Martha Stewart? Or Robert Downey Jr., or whoever the hell else?...

| 12. Then why pretend that a felony has anything to do with the bullshit topic? |
|
If we're gonna talk about cruelty to animals, let's talk about cruelty to fucking animals... why pretend that fiduciary felonies or substance-abuse pecadillos and their legal repercussions are also within the realms of our discussion?
If a kitten runs out in the middle of the street and I can't hit the brakes fast enough to keep from turning it into a chunk of fur suitable for nothing else than making a steering wheel cover... should I lose my job?
How about if I swerve to run it down because my second rate, used car has such a gunky, oily steering wheel that it really could use a steering wheel cover, but I'm not paid enough at work to afford the regular use of cleaning products to cope with the used-steering wheel "sweats" ... I mean, kitten-road-score is cheaper than a regular Windex habit.
Maybe the whole point of this thread, and your participation, is really just bullsh@t... ?

| 14. That's why I make those broken kittens into steering wheel covers... it's a kindness really. |
|
It would be too hard for them to live in the shape of a pretzel... living as if their lives were ruled by kitty laws—when actually they were being judged by arbitrary non-kitty laws made up by a public that likes dogs and rats every bit as much as they like kitties.
Fuck the kitties... if they don't also observe the rat-laws, then they will be made into steering wheel covers.
And if Vick doesn't obey the unwritten laws of the judgemental upper middle class that feels like they should have jurisdiction over all of humanity, then he too should be made into a steering wheel cover...
He is beholden to a different set of laws than Martha Stewart, or Robert Downey Jr., or Gods Know How Many Other Celebrities.... because—you said so? Because you like dogs more than you like cats?... or people who trade on the stock market?... or (ok, I can't think of who might've been victimized by Downey's drug abuses... neither dealers nor fellow participants nor... even cops... no one, but let's pretend for a minute that there were victims in order to continue the charade that the behavior was justifiably criminalized...)
Why are there no threads insisting that Martha Stewart, or Robert Downey Jr. be forever excised from working in the country because they broke the law?... Or—are some laws more legal than others??? More binding??? More, what??

|
a closer example is robert downey jr -- except most of his crimes are what he did to himself -- not to others.

| 16. I'm not arguing one way or another about scumbaggery... only the issue of the thread. |
|
OP talks about crimes and careers.
"If I were convicted of a serious crime, I would be able to resume my career with minor hinderance." ... for instance.
No mention of dogs. No mention of employers. No mention of being a not-so-nice-person (unless you presume committers of "serious crimes" are, by definition, not-so-nice-persons (a presumption that I will, up-front, declare that I do not share).
So... what the fuck is the point of the thread?
Should I feel angry that Martha Stewart can resume her career after her stint in prison with n'ary a hiccup? N'ary a hiccup that shows on my fiduciary radar, at least...
Robert Downey Jr. and his drugs?
Michael Vick and his dogs?
Is self-employment really the deciding factor? A schedule C? SE? ...Do we really believe that Robert Downey Jr. gets a W-2?...
How about people who give a shit just admit that they feel more strongly for dog-rights than they do for human-rights?
Or maybe all those opposed to forgiving Michael Vick should be forced to fight for employment rights for veterinary techs nationwide... fight for a union that would link with the AFL-CIO, the AFT, and/or any other major union... which might aid the employees in affecting the legislation that decides what dog-wise-behavior should be legal, or illegal...
I'm sure the line of volunteers will stretch out across the county line...

| 17. right. cause i couldn't possibly care about both people and animals. |
|
:eyes:
vick was never going to suffer -- and vick only cares that he got caught. he knew in advance that what he would have to 'pay' would be mitigated.
and by the way -- i don't believe he was ever convicted of cruelty to animals, was he? racketeering yes, but not cruelty.
that would -- maybe -- have put a strain on his re-entry to a football career.
and vick doesn't care if you support him and i don't -- he could care less.
