Rep. Shows Claims Dems Don't Welcome White Conservatives

JACKSON, Miss. -- When Rep. Bobby Shows left the Democratic Party on Tuesday to become a Republican, he claimed the party didn't welcome white conservatives, a claim Mississippi Democrats deny.

"The majority leader, Mr. (Tyrone) Ellis, (said) that you can see at this time that there is no room in the Democratic Party for white conservatives, so I am here to be a white conservative Republican," Shows said during a news conference on Tuesday.

"I would never say such a thing," Ellis said. "Not only are there white conservatives in the Democratic Party, there are black conservatives."

And I do indeed hope that there is no place for right-wing white nationalists in the Democratic Party. It's taking some time, to be sure, but the parties are polarizing ideologically such that, one of these days, there will be no base for right-wing ideas among the Democratic electorate.
