ZOMG. I saw this when it came out in theaters and was absolutely delighted when I saw it show up under the "Watch Instantly" header.
What to say about a film where so much of the plot involves the unspoken?
Funny. Painful. Maddening. Deep. The basic premise being the clash of cultures experienced when Allied Soldiers spend their days in a WWII Japanese POW camp. The protagonist is Lieutenant Colonel John Lawrence (Tom Conti) who, because he speaks Japanese, becomes a default advocate for his fellow prisoners. The hero role, however, alternates between the dashing Major Jack Celliers (David Bowie!) and the camp commandant, the beautiful and proud Captain Yonoi. Their forbidden attraction underscores everything. There is so much going on in this film where even the cruelest characters have a sympathetic side.
