Women and girls will die because of legislation like this, and Bush and the Wingnuts do not give a damn. They do not give a damn.

For * it's about pandering to his base. He gains political advantage and nothing else matters.

For the wingnuts, it's all about control of women's lives in general and women's sexuality in particular. They are fanatics, and fanatics are dangerous, dangerous people.

The death of women and girls does not matter -- all that matters is control and obedience. If you disobey and have unauthorized sex, pregnancy is the visible sign and permanent social punishment for doing so. If you try to abort and you die, that is God's just judgment on your crime. If you get raped, you must have done something to bring it on.

When abortion is criminalized, the penalties are extremely severe. Some DUers think these laws can and will be circumvented by doctors -- they are wrong.

Abortion clinics have already disappeared from nearly all small communities because of violence (ie bombings and murders of docs). In the bad old days, doctors were prosecuted for murder and lost their licenses to practice medicine.

That's what drives it underground and leaves it to non-professionals who may not know or care how to make an abortion safe and sanitary -- they are risking prison for as much money as you can scrape together. That is what is meant by "back-alley" abortions. Women will again bleed to death or die of infection.

But none of that matters if you are a fanatic or a Bush.
