U.S. crude oil supplies rose last week by 2.1 million barrels, but gasoline supplies were sharply off, the Energy Department said Wednesday.

Gasoline supplies dropped by a big 5.4 million barrels in the week ending March 24, the largest drop since the week ending Aug. 22, 2003. Still, they remain above the upper end of their average range for this time of year.

Distillate fuel inventories fell by 2.5 million barrels last week but also remain above the upper end of the average range for this time of year. Most of the decline was in heating oil inventories.
