It is based on my inability to wear seatbelts until it was made mandatory. This might not have so much to do with Repubs in general, but with the fundamentalist brigades among them.
I think that they fight these "demons" -even if it subconscious- and seek to create a world in which things they are taught to believe are wrong are made unavailable. First they turn to religion, but when that is not enough, they seek to actually make these things illegal, and with a religious dogma secular trifles like the U.S. Constitution are only temporary obstacles.
Come to think of it, maybe it does apply to Repubs in general: Their continued obsession with communism; calling any political opponent a "traitor". Even the apparent attitude that the rules are meant for others, a la Limbaugh's drug use. They think of themselves as righteous, so even if they stray it's OK. Those who are non-righteous must be punished however. And forgiveness for them is not really in the cards.
It all means the same thing: No one is allowed to live any lifestyle other than the ordained one.
